I have been working out for about 2 years and have noticed that most people don't seem to like to talk to other people while their working out. If you go long enough you seem to make a few friends(usually the same sex), but the women seem to have their defences up and getting them to do talk is like pulling teeth sometimes. I'm not talking about hitting on them, just having a conversation. Why?

Most people are limited on time so they got specific x sets in y time to do with z rest periods....so talking to you isn't their priority....

If someone wants to chat, it means I have to put down the weights and pull out my head phones...PITA...I too am just there to workout, nothing more, nothing less. If you smile at me, I'll certainly smile back but, not if I'm in the middle of a lift and grimacing with pain...

I have friendly days, and not so friendly days. It really just depends on what all is on my mind. Some times I goto the gym to work off some stress.

When I'm at the gym I have to put myself in a zone, for me that means listening to music, concentrating on my breathing, counting reps, counting rest time.... I only have a certain amount of time to get it all done and it's very important to me that I complete my workout. If someone wants to talk to me at the gym it has to be important, like if you need help or you have a fitness related question. :)-------------- \"One Ring to rule them all; One Ring to find them; One Ring to bring them all, and in the Darkness bind them.\" -LOTR Trilogy |

Hence the reason why I usually wear one of two t-shirts when I lift:

Most people, unless its workout related don't wanna talk. A slight nod, or "spot" me talk is fine.....other than that most are there, just like work, get in get out.-------------- Get your bicep curling, cut off shirt, matching workout outfit wearing, flexing in mirror "toned" wanna-be ass , out of my squat rack! Exactly...I put my headphones on and will occassionally give a nod or something but typically keep to myself. The only people I say anything to is the person working the front counter, on the way in and the way out.

Hmmm...during my gym days, I usually had the tunes on, and was there just to work out. I don't mind the chats, but when it interupts a lift, then I have an issue. Always crackin' a smile though when someone makes eye contact.
I wish those chatting would save it for the times they are not on equipment. LOL Now I work out @ home or in my lame little apt gym & most days, it's just me. |

I agree, when i go to work out, I am not there to talk with people. I am a friendly person, but if i take time out to sit around and chat, i dont feel as if i am getting a good workout.
What i think is funny, are the girls who go to the gym with pretty little outfits on, with their hair done to perfections, and have all kinds of jewlery and makeup on. They dont do much of a work out, and are mostly there for the social time. You are at the gym to work out and sweat, it is not the time to look all prissy. |

Whilst i agree with that for the most part, if it wasnt for asking a guy how he managed to do this one lift correctly i would not have a spotter when on the bench nor someone to have healthy competition with.
