Hey all i have a 6 year old little girl who is 4 feet 3 inches tall and she is 72 lbs..I am being told by everyone but my family doctor that she is overweight..Can anyone help me on this topic and have any good recipe suggestions.

Hi
Children learn by example,if they see their parents eating healthy foods,they will follow that example.Providing your daughter with healthy foods will help with her weight.Cut out the junk food/juices and empty calorie snacks.Give her fruit and vegtables to snack on,whole grain crackers and cheese etc


Get her motivated to exercise more,ride a bike,go for a walk with you,set the example for her...At her age,she will want to be like you,do the things you do etc so use this to your and her advantage.

I do not buy junk food.I have enrolled her in TaeKwonDo and just bought her a new bike last year so it actually works out good.She has an older sibling to which helps with this..My oldest is very active but the youngest after school all she wants to do is sleep.

Get a doctor health check 1st...then get her OUT after school go outside with her.....Talk to here and make sure everything is ok at school too....encourage play...even if you don't buy junk food...make sure she isn't overeating then going to sleep...lots of veggies, fruit, good healthy dairy, lean meats. Ask if she wants to help...encourage her to help make the meals....Is she interested in TKD?

Since your daughter is only 6 years old, I'd try not to obsess about it, especially around her. She has just started school, so the transition to the outside world may be overwhelming. I agree with lonegirl, make sure everything is OK outside the home as far as her mood goes. Simply encourage activity by doing things with her and definetely teach her about healthy eating. Do not tell her your worried about her weight...she's 6! Make exercise fun and help her establish good eating habits. Including her in meal making is a great idea as well.

I aggree not to obsess but this is the time to get her on the long road to health...there are way too many inactive obese kids today...I was always a pudgy kid but I was athletic...climbing trees, running around in the fields, playing baseball...essentially outside as much as I could....too many kids I see now are content to never step outside...it is sad really.

I agree,and there is TOO much access to fast foods and junk..There isnt anything wrong with eating fast food once in a blue moon,but with so many parents working,it just is easier and faster to pick up McD's.

Kids are inside watching tv,playing on a game console or on the pc all the time...When I was a kid,we were outside from morning till the st lights came on..Things have changed so much and not always for the better

I fail to see how exactly 4 foot 3 inch and 72 lbs is overweight? even for a girl?

The average weight and height for a 6 year old girl is 45 inches tall and about 45lbs...if the childs weight exceeds the 95% percentile on the growth chart,then this is considered overweight.

Sorry ladies, but I have to agree with mutt on this one. I think too much is being read into this. Feed the kid healthy foods and let the kid be a kid already.
The growth chart is simply that, a chart. If your family Doctor isn't concerned about her weight, why should you be? It sounds as if your more concerned about how people perceive yourself as you are about her weight. I believe you look at what others say as an indication of how well you do as a parent and this bothers you. Teach her good eating habits as second nature. Not as an issue. It's your job to feed her and determine what and when she eats. This should not be an issue for the child. Feed her right and let her play and be a kid.

I do not overfeed her here is a list of what she eats during the day.

Breakfast
2 pieces of multigrain toast with becel
1 glass of 2% milk

Lunch at school
a skim milk cheese sandwich plan with multigrain bread(she does not like anything on the bread but the cheese)

Apple

Breton Vegetable Crackers

Carrot Sticks
Some of that is for mid morning snack at school and to drink she has milk.

Afternoon Snack

1 Apple and a glass of water or juice

Tonights supper

She will eat this

1 piece of boneless skinless chicken roasted with bbq sauce
peas,carrots,cabbage and mashed potatoes with becel

for bedtime snack
she usually has 2 piece of toast with becel with a glass of milk

Now you tell me where does the Doctor get off saying and my ex husband saying she is an overweight child..I do not think she is really overweight i myself think she is a very healthy energetic child..She loves TaeKwonDo she is a yellow stripe.

Looks like a healthy diet to me. Seems to me you need to work on your husbands, and others attitude towards your daughters weight. Do not obsess about her weight or you'll find she will start to obsess about it herself. Keep up with offering her healthy choices, tell her she is beautiful and ignore others comments. Self esteem is more important than anything else at this age!! Looks to me like you know what your doing, so keep it up!! Geez...wish my kids would eat that healthy:)

My ex husband does not live with me but 2 weeks ago he came over to see the girls and he went to pick up my youngest and said bubbi your getting to fat daddy cannot pick you up or he will get a hernia..He always thinks of himself not others feelings.When he left i told her she was not fat not to listen to that comment daddy was saying because she is a beautiful little girl.

seems to me that this isn't a problem with your child


unfortunately kids tend to be over sensitive to what their parents think of them up to a certain age

as a dad, i can see how a concern of what is happening in the house might create an issue but comments like that will only serve to create eating disorders in the future

since the problem will be in her perception of herself (selfworth and self esteem), i suggest starting peer pressure resistance training and psych counseling at this point to try to head off the problem. whatever you decide to do, professional help is advised.

She is only in kindergarten at school she is 6 yrs old and there is no peer pressure resistance training here at the schools they say they have an anti bullying program that has proven to be ineffective but she really is a happy go lucky little girl

As a over weight/obese child I know what it is like. Just be there for her, try to steer her to fun exercise, the fact she is in martial arts and likes it is a huge boost. JUst make sure her snacks and foods are not filled with empty calories and lots of sugar. Good luck.

well i look at the calorie intake she eats alot of apples and bananas but does not like to eat alot of anything else..I think she is going through a stage of not wanting to eat..When she does eat though i feed her nothing but good foods as you seen above

I also have a 6 year old child. He is not overweight but from reading the previous posts, I can give you what I would do for your child. She does not need to hear comments about her weight as this will lead to self-consiousness. Do not make her do activities that she is not interested in, but she is 6. She will copy what momma and daddy does. Go outside and garden, let her help you dig the holes and lift the flowers and such, even raking the leaves or picking up sticks will have her outside. If your in an area where you can walk, WALK, she will love the time spent with you playin games like 'I spy' along the way. I take this stuff into consideration with my son. He enjoys sports so I go out and play baseball and football with him, jump on the trampoline. These are things he has fun doing and does not consider exercise. But I know I'm out there with him, getting him in the habit of being active and not watching cartoons all afternoon. Look at the upside, she will have great memories of you two together while becoming active. Good luck and I hope this made sense to you as well as give you some ideas on how to begin.

hey all, im 15 years old and im 10 stone and iv'e just joined a football team. i find it hard to keep up with the rest of the team, and when people take there shirt of after the match i feel too embarest to take mine of, any tips??
