1/2 cup of them has 129 calories, 29.7 carbs, 2.2 fiber - according to the book I had sitting on my desk - calories seemed high to me so I want to check someplace else.
Cutting out sugar is good - cut out white flour too.
as to where to begin - click on the Nutritional plans up at the top. fill in the info & it will tell you how many calories, protiens, fats, & carbs to have for you.
as for the sweet potatoes - they are high in vitinams so they are good for you just watch what you put on them.
make sure you are building muscle so you can keep the fat away.

Sweet potatoes are better for you than white potatoes. Just try not to eat a ton of 'em if you're trying to lose weight.

To lose, try to take in around 1500-1600 calories a day to start and see where that puts you after a couple weeks. 50% coming from protein, 30% coming from carbs and 20% coming from good fats. Sweet potatos are good for you. They can be part of your carb intake. Go to the specific diet and nutrition forum and eat foods off the list supplied in the "grocery list for healthy eating". If your losing at the end of a couple weeks, stay the course until you stop losing and then reduce the amount of calories by 200 a day. do this until you reach your desired weight. Don't go to low on calories though. and don't forget you can introduce cardio as a calorie deficit without cutting the actual caloric intake. Eat 5-7 smaller meals a day every 3 hours or there about. Don't use the nutritional planner here, not very accurate. You need to maintain consistancy with your eating though, that is key. Maybe read "diet thread" in the specific diet and nutrition forum as well. Fill out your profile so we can get to know you better an be of even more help when you post questions. Good luck and welcome to FT!!!

***Clarification***
Stay the course until you stop losing and then reduce daily calories by 200. NOT 200 daily.
