Hello everyone,
I am new to this site, and would like to know if there are any 40+ year olds seeing results in fat lost and tone from home work outs. Or are we couted out for developing a decent looking body due to our age? By that i mean muscle tone.:(

Hi
Iam 41 and been on the FT program for a month and 2 weeks on my own..and yes I have had good results so far.I have lost 11lbs and lost a total of 7 inches..I work out only at home,I have a small gym in my basement with machines and free weights. I also do pilates at home too..

You are NEVER too old to have a great healthy body...or develop great muscle tone..it just takes a healthy lifestyle, determination and patience

I read a message regarding increase work outs with weights and decrease on the cardio. What do consider to be a decrease in cardio?
I normally do 30 min cardio 3 to 4 times a week.

Cardio is good for training the heart, and some weight loss, but it shouldnt be your basis for weight loss.By weight lifting and working the larger muscle groups of the body, you will burn more calories and loose more weight...

I do believe that 20 mins of good cardio three times a week is best, and then lift weights

I use to do a workout 4 days a week. Each training day would work diff muscle groups. And I only made each workout for 40 mins because I found that after 40 mins I would burn out.My cardio consisted of high low high low...1 min spent at high level..then 3 mins low level..
Cardio-10 mins
Weights-20 mins
Cardio-10 mins

You can adjust your workouts according to what your goals are..but make sure you get some good weight lifting in there.

I agree totally with mysticgraces comments. At 42, I have totally changed my physique by weight training over the last year or 2. I used to do a lot of cardio, but adding wt training really firmed up my body and made me look slimmer(even though I still weigh the same). I do work out at a gym, but as mysticgraces says, you can certainly do the same workouts at home. Start working out with weights and you'll be amazed at the changes in your body! If you're just starting out, focus on a full body workout using large muscle groups, with things like lunges, squats, bench presses, pushups, pullups, pulldowns, dead lifts etc.... Personally I try and do 3 cardio(30-40min each) and 3 wt training sessions (45min-1hr) per week. I do my wt lifting and cardio on separate days (wts-MWF, cardio-TThS, Rest sundays)

So get to it...you're never too old to begin:big_smile:

Kind of ironic isnt it..that we KNEW 20 years ago what we needed to do to get in great shape and yet we wait till our 40's to do it..do you think our 40th birthdays are a turning point? Kinda like **it or get off the pot"

I think for me,I finally figured out that I literally wasted the first half of my life indulging..and now I refuse to waste any more time.

SUCCESS TO US!

Age is no barrier, the person with the best physique I've seen is in their 50's, so there, let that be your motivation!:dumbbell:

I think a lot of waiting until you aproach 40 has as much to do with time constaints with small kids, building a career, etc, while in your 20's and 30's. Once my kids got more self sufficient I found I had a lot more "me" time and actually had time to reflect on how I really wanted to look and feel. Although, I definetly did do one of those "I have to reach this goal before I turn 40". From lessons learned, I am teaching my teen daughters the value of weight training and staying physically active. I think it will make their aging process much easier!

And Mojo, your absolutely right. The guy with the best body at my gym is in his 50's as well....and then there's BB1...

I agree with you.I think by the time we are age 40 we are more secure in our futures and in ourselves, and we loose that desire to please everyone..and start not to care so much what others think

My girls are 14 and 7 and I know that Iam a role model for them in exercise and proper diet..I have 5 kids in total, and I know that I may not totally erase some of the changes I went through, being pregnant with 5 kids, and iam OK with that.

I dont want to be in my 60's and on all kinds of medications becasue I neglected my health in my 40's

So heres to US!

I believe we turn serious in our 40's because we know it's our last chance to get fit while were still considered young.

At 40 your life is pretty much over. It's a life of Geritol, Metamusal, dentures and Matlock. My wife cooks the pablum, I gum it right down and then it's a rolicking day of CSPAN.

Wake up folks - Im 60 and still working on keeping fit. Let it go over the last 18 months due to a severe and serious illness (not related to poor diet or bad choices - picked up a virus)and its taken time to pick up again.

Now do Tai Chi once a week for flexibility, balance and friendship, work at home on a series of different videos for a couple of cardio sessions, walk twice a week if its fine and include a couple of hills, and do if I can 3 various 20 min video strength ones targeting what ever I feel like. Abs, Upper or lower body

All round fitter than I was 20 or even 40 years ago when life was very different and fitness was mowing the lawns, gardening or housework.

Carry a couple of injuries from accidents over the years but can get around it.

Keep it up folks - but don't get too carried away by the huge pecs, the six pack - look on fitness as health rather than beauty.

I think by the time we hit our late 30's, 40's we start the realize that the yo yo diets and the quick fixes don't work and come to embrace what works. I started 6 years ago at 200 pounds and I will be at my goal of 135 by the end of the year.

Really and truly, the only reason anyone needs a gym over 40, or for that matter younger is...

A: If you plan to bodybuild/compete

B:(this is the biggie) motivation. What I mean here is if you take the time to drive to a gym, chances are you will work out/do something to justify your drive.

The problem with home workouts is 'break times'. They tend to be longer, as there are many distractions at home, phone calls, movies, have to stop to cook dinner for the husband/wife, mail, any number of reasons can be contrived much easier.

There are plenty of great home workouts, add in outside activities when it is warm, and you can easily accomplish goals at home.

Case in point...enter Wii Fit. I have talked with numerous folks who are using this, (my wife included) who are making wonderous progress. The challenge is as with any other workout, making yourself do it!

The Wii Fit is awesome and fun. My stepson I forgot to post has lost 40 lbs. with it!

It tracks your progress, weighs you, tests your fitness level. You set the goals you want and it is 'smart' enough to track you.

I thought I shoudld probably note here that I bought my stepson and kids their Wii last Christmas, not this recent one. I bought my wife's this Christmas. She is on it as I type this. If you do not work up a sweat with this, something is wrong or you are in dam good shape!
