I thought that to build muscle you had to lift until your last rep seems nearly impossible. Is this lifting to failure? Also, what damage does it do to your CNS?

Define training to failure. Training till you fail at medium repetitions is one good way to wear out your CNS. However, when a powerlifter goes for a 3rm or even a 1 rm, the rep will be difficult, however it is not the same thing.

Thanks for ansewering. I read some previous threads about "lifting to failure" but never understood what it is. someone described it as lifting with a final rep that is very difficult and everyone agreed it is unhealthy. since I lift until I can barely or even can't do the final rep I didn´t know if this is lifting to failure. Can you explain the difference beetwen a hard set and a set of lifting to failure?

I like to leave a rep in the tank. This ensures that my form will not fail.

As for the difference, it all depends on what you consider training to failure. I define it as a set in which you fail.

I understand "Lifting to Failure" to be the point you can no longer complete a rep without cheating or breaking good form.

I think a common sense approach to this is simply lifting till you can no longer complete a rep in good form without assistance. This normally will end up like Wrestler pointed out, with a "rep in the tank".

Now this can get into some hairy stuff, like what are you lifting for, (hypertrophy, pure strength, etc.) then rep range more than failure is the issue, because your final rep of the rep range you choose to work from should basically be "failure".

And what about lifgting beyond the point you can no longer have good form by cheating? Is it something you discourage or can it help causing a litte more damage to the muscles and making it grow more? Cause I kind of do that sometimes lol

This has its place...but you need to be a bit advanced, and "controlled" cheating is still best. It is a way to shock the muscle.
