A chin up is with the palms facing toward you and a pull up is with the palms facing away.

Makes sense! thanks. My next question: ive stopped doing chin ups and only do pull ups more b/c i find them more challenging. Should i switch it up and sometimes do the pull up instead of the chin up? or are they both targeting the same areas (just pull up with more difficulty and more reward)

hmmm...so what do you call them when your palms are facing each other, as mine are on an assisted machine...I'm assuming a pull up?

vikings1, they are targeting the back in all scenarios, however some of them tax different muscles also. chin ups are more for biceps i believe while wide pullups involve a lot more back. obviously each variation still uses all the parts, but you can focus on 1 spot a little more by adjusting accordingly (hope that makes sense)
