Focus on squats, deadlifts , and the like...

yes train abs with low reps...5 reps and under IMO...if u can do more than that...use additional resistance

At 5'11" and 145, I would say forget about abs and try to gain some muscle. Abs on a guy with toothpick arms and no chest look pretty silly. Forget the media, abs will not make you look better at this point. Geez, I remember when a big chest and arms was what guys wanted. Abs are overrated....media blitz.

Well, you say you are 5/11 and 145. Trying to get abs at this point will result in a starvation look more than likely. Not a healthy look at all. I would try to gain some muscle.

From a female opinion bb1fit is right. Abs on a small guy just looks silly. Just looks like he is starved or something. I would work on gaining some muscle mass, pack on some weight, without getting fat.
Good luck!

At almost 6' 145lbs, I'd call you lanky, if that. And this is coming from someone that has alway been in demand to make a light weight class.

Seriously, adding on the mass will bring out your abdominals even more. I honestly can tell you my abs look better now training for strength competition even though I have put on bodyfat, because the added muscle accentuates your abdominals, even if they are not as well defined.

Media blitz indeed.

I'm going to go ahead and emphasize the eating thing. This is something a lot of people miss. I think I would amaze some people as to how many calories I take in on training days just to MAINTAIN my weight, and I am a lightweight.

Just start eatting everything in sight! Even a big huge greasy pizza wont kill ya  Wrestler125 is right, for a guy to maintain or put on some weight, he has to take in a lot of food! IMO you can pretty much eat whatever, just as long as you are staying active and working out:dumbbell:
Good luck!

uh... well i wouldnt exactly say that. its better to eat clean 90% and maybe eat crap the other 10%. If everythin you eat is to gain fat, yes you can do that with good and bad foods. Its the other stuff, like cholesterol and blood lipids rises which are contributed by bad foods. I think Dave Tate is a prime example of some of these things.
In summary, dont eat EVERYTHING in site, still moderate yourself. Eat a lot of good foods, however, it IS difficult to get all your daily caloric needs on a solely clean diet, so that is where cheatin is allowed. Either way, eat b/c you need weight

I can see where dave is coming from though. 5000 calories is not easy. Especially not clean. Know when to cheat. I could put down 2000 taco bell calories after training and it didnt matter, but if I did that before bed, I'd be screwed.

Thing is, pitbull wasn't asking for an opinion of what would look good, but how he could achieve a specific goal.

This is true. However, the good thing about this forum is that you can often learn something without having to ask specifically.

At 6" I would shoot for 175-180, maybe 185. Try and remember, you are going to have to gain, then diet back down to lower your BF% enough to see your abs. And to be honest with you, it is very difficult to acheive and then maitain. Like many have said, they are overrated to say the least.

Aim to constantly improve. If you feel good at 160-165, then cut down and lean out. After you get to that point, start putting on mass again. Repeat as necessary.

Oh, and I'm right here with you pitbull. I recently decided to move up a weight class (once again) to welterweight. So I too will be shotting for 175 by the end of summer.

~5'10-5'11"

I'm tall and lanky, thats for sure, but that is what sports have required from me up until now. I have always been under pressure to maintain myself at a light weight. Now that I am no longer required to work at a weight class, I have decided it's unhealthy to stay this light at my height. Besides, I like the way my lifts go up when I am gaining weight.

I can tend to float around 160-165. Although I recently dipped below 150 for a competition, I'll be back up to 165 shortly.

Well the getting stronger will help to build muscle. But I would gradually increase your calorie intake.
