I just started keeping a food journal and was astonished to realize that I was eating just over 1000 calories per day - Eek! I'm 5'9", 143 lbs, 26 BF% and exercise 6 or 7 days per week. (3 days weight training - Monday - back & chest, Tuesday - shoulders, biceps and triceps and Friday - legs, also aim for 4 cardio sessions/week). However, besides my workouts, I am very inactive as I have been studying for exams for about 14 hrs/day at home.

My question is, how slowly should I be adding calories - this week I'm aiming for 1400 up from just under 1200? My carbs/protein/fat ratio has been about 60/30/10.

Also, as I up my caloric intake, will there be an initial weight gain? I'm looking to lose body fat, so I'm very nervous about consuming additional calories. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As long as you remain under maintenance, you should see litle fat gain. An increase of 10% every 3-4 days until you reach maintenance should be fine.

Okay, that makes sense. I guess that my fear was that my body would still be afraid that it was going to be underfed and hold onto the fat and hence, weight gain. I guess my question was a bit premature; last night I jumped on the scale and since I've started upping calories I've lost 1/2kg after having been stable for quite a few weeks.

I appreciate your help. Thanks.
