instead of taking the protein powders could you just take amino acids? would they be just as goog?

Not very cost effective. Protein is typically ~20 gr. per scoop, aminos are at best 1 gr. per. So you would have to take 20 tablets.(we are talking peptide bonded full spectrum now, right?)

Individual free form have their uses.
