What specific exercises are you referring to? And...it doesn't think you're a man--barbells are not just for men. The pictures may look intimidating because they are demo'd by a man using a lot more weight than you would use. You can start by doing the barbell exercises with the barbell alone (45 lbs), then add weights as low as 5 lbs. at a time when you've built strength.

Not sure how the double post happened...sorry! But also wanted to add that some gyms have smaller barbells with various weights permanently attached which you may feel more comfortable using. I use these for military presses and biceps curls.

The best thing is variety. Don't rely on machines alone; use everything your gym has to offer. Keeps you and your muscles from getting bored.

Thanx, the pics did look intimidating. But I said that I didn't have machines and that I didn't have access to a gym, that I just wanted to workout from my home with hand weights. It still gave me workouts involving machines. And I couldn't figure out if I had chose the wrong workout choices or what, so I just thought maybe someone would be able to help me out. Thanx again
