I've seen a lot of guys in the gym doing this. What are the advantages? I think I have a decent arch for my bench and to me this would be counterproductive.

I think while using extremely heavy weight you tend to also lift your back while lifting the weight. I do not use belt however while completing the last rep when I am unable to force the weight up I tend to lift my back to keep the weight on the bar.

it reduces tension on the 'core' somewhat....some people think it reduces risks of back injuries or hernias....

however majority of people are just ignorant...or think they are cool when they wear them...

I have never used a belt...even under the heaviest of sets...ur body has a natural belt(transversus abdominis) that keeps everything in place...as long as u progress properly and dont lift too heavy...

I bench with a big arch and have never needed the belt....
