You can always use a measuring tape which is probably going to be more accurate for the average person.

The measuring tape is the most inaccurate way to do it. It works if your the ideal shape and make up of the medicaly thought up person. You know, the person on the bottles with a tube and circle stomach. Since we are not cookie cutter people, the way that I suggest is water displacement. I do not know how it works exactly, but I know it is 99.8 percent accurate, as the tape test is under 70 percent.

I'm sure what mike meant by taking measurements is to gauge your progress that way. You take your measurements now, at various parts of your body and then take them again every 3-4 weeks. If you are loosing body fat, you will loose overall inches. Personally, I've found the best way to guage my progress is to look at yourself naked in front of a mirror...scary, but it works! Before and after photos work great as well. Also you tell by how your clothes fit.
-------------- Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.
