I read this article and thought I'd pass it along.

I understand how lifting heavy can affect some people in negative ways (possibly even resulting in death), but damn it sure is fun! :dumbbell:

That is scary and makes me wonder if high blood pressure alone is a problem when lifting heavy:surprised: ???

Well, my husband has high blood pressure, so if he were to lift heavy it would raise his blood pressure even more. I wonder if it would get to a dangerous level that way. I'm pretty sure his high blood pressure comes from being overweight and his heart is healthy so far.

Well yes in that case you need to be healthy and if I remeber that report one fallacy of it was that they tested people with bad BP to begin with. A normal person whould not worry about. ALso I think they had then wear belts all the time and that can also raise BP a lot when lifting.

i think i need to bulk up alot so i can increase what i can lift. half my bodyweight is only 113. I need to get up to at least.... 1000lbs. that should save me the trouble of having to worry about these heavy weights on my heart right?

I would not worry about it of the 31 subjects in the study all had inheriented heart problems....DUH, if the aorta is bad and you add pressure to it of course it is going to blow, what a stupid study.

I don't think it's that stupid. The Dr doesn't say all weight training is bad. In fact, he recommends it.

He just recomends you get a heart ultrasound (or whatever) to make sure you don't have the specific condition before starting.

...and the main patient of the story had been working out for 5 years before his blew, so it's not like you know you're ok because you've done it a while.

A couple retarded effing points...

They studied thousands of patients, and could ONLY find 31 subjects that they could find even a LINK in. Not, 31 people participated in a study and 10 died, but it took lots of research to even find 31 patients.

every one of them had a pre-exhisting aneurysm. By no accounts does should a normal healthy individual have an aneurysm that no one knows about.

Cause and effect Manny. High blood presure is not normally a risk factor for an aorta blow out.

You are more likely to die from high blood pressure due to inactivity.

And I would like to remind everyone that the number one health risk in the united states isn't exercise, it isn't a blown aorta, it isn't lifting more than half your bodyweight. It's OBESITY.

yxven- His dad died from heart diease, a genetic link right there. The way that story was written was a typical statistical report to prove THEIR findings. IT is scary to think that out of 31 people 10 died. But like steve said thousands were interviewed to find them. That is why I called it stupid. Heavy weight lifting for 99% of the population is safer than driving a car, taking a bath, eating a chicken wing, smoking, dancing, making love, walking you dog, hell I know of people that lost limbs due to a papercut. Does that mean you stop all that cause a few people have a bad accident or what have you?

Ok off my soapbox. Manny if your hubby has bad BP get him to a doc and get him exercising!

If anything proper exercise can lower one's BP. (assuming no preexisting genetic/injury conditions)

I think once I started lifting heavy my blood pressure dropped despite lifting very heavy just about every workout.

Mutt- believe me, I've been trying very hard to get him motivated, but ever since his knee surgery he has been letting himself go. Now he's so out of shape that it's difficult for him to get started. He loves playing raquetball, that's how he hurt his knee. He's not able to play now and he doesn't seem to want to lift weights or he doesn't know how to get started. Whenever I try to teach him I get the feeling he doesn't like learning it from (a girl) LOL. Maybe it's a man/pride thing, not sure. I could really use some suggestions on how to get him started! PLEASE!!!

Get him on a bicycle for 30 minutes a day. Go swimming. Take him for a brisk 30 min walk every day. Get him lifting moderate weights for 8-12 reps. Find a good local trainer that is experienced in working with people like your husband.

Those are all good ideas, but that's not the problem, I can come up with lots of really healthy, fun stuff to do. The problem is how do I convince him to do it with or without me? We don't really have the money for a trainer.

Here is a way. Gather info (brochures) on funeral homes etc. ALso get a will made and ask him to sign it. He is going to ask why and tell him that at his current rate you expect him to die. Harsh but effective!

LOL......:surprised: would that work on you? Man, there has got to be a not so brutal way. I have talked to him about me being concerned about his health, well, he calls it nagging:big_smile: so I guess your way may be the proper next step:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I don't find it funny at all. That's a great idea, Mutt.
