I am doing close grip pull downs with the palms inward to work my back. Is it imperative that the bar reaches nipple depth to work the muscle?
I can pull more weight to just below the chin, but there's not much point doing that if it isn't working the lats. It is only on the last set(heaviest weight), that I cannot get it all the way down..........

You won't get any extra lat stimulation by pulling to the nipples. Just make sure you can control it beneath your chin.

Cheers. Do you think pull ups are generally better than pull downs?

In my opinion, chins of any type are the king...they are tough, may be the reason so many folks do not do them. Do them with a variety of hand positions. You can strap a dumbbell around your waist for extra resistance when you get stronger in them.
