My situtation:
I'm a Female, approx. 5' 5" - 118 lbs, lost 50 lbs last year and am trying to maintain / firm up. I'm eating 2,000 calories a day - 18% Fat - 29% Protein - 53% Carbs. Seems to be working for me but let me know if any suggestions. I have not been on a regular training routine recently but work out when I can - combination of Running, Pilates, Strength Training. My issue: I have a paper route which gets me up at 2:30 AM and out the door by 3:00. My question is what should I eat at that time? I generally have my breakfast (always oatmeal with fruit) around 8 ish but I do get hungry in the early hours. Am not sure what I should be eating that early - proteins - carbs - both? I am back by 6 AM and out the door in an hour to go to "my real job". The paper delivery consists of sitting in the car for a few hours so there is no exercise there. Thanks - I get the best advice here! Oh - side note - any opinions on Cathe Friedrich strength training videos? |

Try a good energy bar when you wake up. Something all-natural.-------------- I am a rough carpenter, nobody can kick my a$$ (me) http://www.myspace.com/jeramiemaza |

A blend of proteins with a bit of carbs would probably be good. For instance a quick digesting protein like some eggs, along with some anti catabolic protein lik some casein(cottage cheese, etc.) Have some fruit like blueberries, strawberries, etc. You could invest in a MRP if you like, if you don't have time to make eggs for instance. Just blend up and go. -------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

MMMMM. A smoothie - frozen fruit, lowfat yogurt, a little protein powder. When you get up in the morning your body really needs some fuel. I read recently that if you don't eat within an hour of waking your metabolism starts to slow down. That sets the tone for the day - rev it up by having some carbs and protein, as bbfit suggests, even if you aren't active while delivering papers, you are recovering from an overnight fasting state.:)-------------- You don't drown by falling in the water. Thanks for the advice - I didn't know if I should be leaning towards carbs or protein that early and had a hard time finding something simple that was both. I'd love a smoothie but hate to use the blender (hubby would NOT be happy). I am also trying to find something portable so I can bring in the car with me and eat after an hour or so.
This morning I had a half a bagel with a tsp of peanut butter that definately perked me up and I can definately see a difference in my attitude already (positive). |

EAS and some other companies make some pretty good ready-to-drink shakes, also.-------------- You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there. |

Again, a blend of protiens with some good complex carbs like oats or something would be ideal. The blend of proteins being some faster acting protein for obvious reasons, and slow digesting proteins like casein to keep amino acid blood levels somewhat stable. Having a complex carb or even as you had pb, fats will slow things down a bit and a good idea. As I am a fan of mixed meals anyway. :)-------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

I'm thinking egg whites scrambled with cottage cheese and some tomatoes on a whole wheat english muffin. I can make these and freeze them - might be messy in the car but I think it can be done.

Or you can wrap them in a whole wheat tortilla or put them in a whole wheat pita pocket-------------- You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there. |

GREAT idea - thanks.
Just a thought - would a home made shake/smoothie hold in the fridge for a few days if I was to say, make a batch twice a week? Does the protein powder loose its potency? That is really my ideal situation but I just can't be using noisy appliances that early in the AM. |
