In my opinion, the protein sources should be varied and should include soy. All sources of protein are good for the muscles.

I don't know how/if its used in building muscle tissue, but I can say that soy protein has one BIG advantage over the other proteins and is why I take it (in addition to whey, which I take after my workouts). In several studies, it was proven that soy protein can reduce levels of LDLs (bad cholesterol) in your body. The studies that I read about had the subjects take something on the order of 40g soy protein a day and the average reduction in cholesterol levels was around 10% (I can't remember the real numbers, do a search on Google and the archives here, I believe I posted some URLs to articles that talk about these studies).

I take 31g of soy protein daily (TwinLabs VegeFuel supplement). I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but in less than three months, my total cholesterol count dropped 25%. In those three months, I also started exercising and eating right (i.e. avoided saturated fats) so I don't know if that or the soy had a greater role in the cholesterol reduction - but I'm sure the soy had something to do with it. Anyway, you can't beat the results, so I'm going to continue enjoying my soy! :-)

I have heard good things about Soy and bad things about Soy. I've heard it's good for women but then I've heard it may not be good for women who've been dx'd w/ breast cancer. My doctor said there have also been cases of men growing breasts from too much Soy!!

I figure everything in moderation. There are a lot of articles on the web about it.

Do women's breasts also get bigger with soy? Just curious.

Nope Lumina lol I'm sorry but no.

Ah the soy..... As Metraa says; many things have been said about soy.
I drink soy milk and eat some other soy products every day and I feel fine.

Soy products contain a lot of phytoestrogens. Soy isoflavones are great for women who have problems with PMS (as well as for other problems) because of that reason. This can also affect men in a not-so-good way. Estrogens, no matter what form thay are in, are not good for men trying to gain mass. Men are usually after an increase in testosterone (I tend to wonder about those who aren't). The occassional soy protein intake won't bother you. But if your main dietary source of protein is soy, you may want to change it soon.

"...there have also been cases of men growing breasts from too much Soy!!"

I was wondering why lately I find myself staring at the mirror for so long... these beauties are coming in nice... in another month, I'll never leave the house! :-D

HA! I'll need to see some proof on that one - what did the test subjects do? Have daily inhalations of 1,000g of soy?

Mazz, you make me laugh! I'm was just repeating what my doctor said. We were talking about how soy works similiar to estrogen. It is a good thing God created women w/ breasts and not men...

That depends what you're looking for maab!!!
Your daily calorie intake, when you take it etc

You can eat the soy with some oats in the mornings but just with water straight after weight training.

Thank you Philia,
I'm actually trying to gain some lean muscle. So I started taking soy isolate protein 25g x 3 times daily. I understand that when I'm eating actual meat or whatever food rich in protein I can skip a dose or two of soy. What I would like to know is: do I need to eat something with it when I have my afternoon or late evening snack?
Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Maab, are you talking about complementary proteins? If so, soy is a complete protein; you don't have to eat anything with it.

No soy ISN'T a complete protein, BUT in the protein powders today they have put in the missing amino acids and MADE it into a complete protein.

Okey, you are bulking (trying to put on muscle mass) Mix your protein with milk and eat a piece of bread and fruit with your shake.

Soy is a complete protein in that it contains all nine amino acids. It doesn't need to be eaten with a "complimentary food".

This is from the SoyFoods Assoc. o/ NA -

"Soy protein is the only plant protein that is equivalent to animal protein. Soyfoods
contains all nine essential amino acids. The U.S. Department of Agriculture evaluates
protein quality using the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acids Score (PDCAAS).
PDCAAS measures the amino acid pattern of proteins and factors in digestibility. Soy
protein has a PDCAAS score of 1.0, equivalent to animal protein."

Also from the FDA-

"Soy protein products can be good substitutes for animal products because, unlike some other beans, soy offers a "complete"
protein profile. Soybeans contain all the amino acids essential to human nutrition, which must be supplied in the diet because
they cannot be synthesized by the human body. Soy protein products can replace animal-based foods--which also have
complete proteins but tend to contain more fat, especially saturated fat--without requiring major adjustments elsewhere in the
diet."

So did anyone come across the tests on the estrogen levels?

I'm helping some friends improve their diets as well as myself and just found out about this today at GNC.

I also read the other day that soy can help with reducing high blood pressure so I'm curious to read how much one can have with out the boosted estrogen levels.
