i just picked up some whey protein. how often should i take it and should it be before or after my workout(or both).

Depends...post workout is a given. Pre workout/during workout however depends on your pre workout meal timing. If you have plenty of nutrients in your system from the day, then it is probably not needed pre workout. Just your normally scheduled quality meal will probably suffice. However, if you are going to have a grueling workout, a mix of glucose of any type and some whey protein will go a long way toward keeping 'performance' optimal. This can be sipped throughout the workout. You will have to assess your own needs for this useage.

now i always see a protein shake early in the morning with many people. should i take one when i wake up or not???

Really the only time you need it is post workout. (whey).
My post was alluding to what you eat prior to workout that will determine if it is beneficial or not then. For instance, if you only have 15-20 minutes before your workout, a mixture of glucose and whey can be ideal.
In fact, a few pieces of candy or so can be ideal pre workout.

i think im going to try 1 scoop before my workout and then the other 2 after. do you think that would be effective??
