Alright, here's the deal. I'm 5'10" 18 year old. I have great definition in my legs, subpar definition in my upper body and a partial spare tire. I am happy with the amount of muscle I have, my bench max is 300, leg press 1000. My objective is to lose body fat and keep as much muscle as possible. Im even willing to sacrafice some tho. Ive been eating as FT prescribed, about 38 grams of fat, 500 carbs, 3000 cals, and 200 protein. The calories and protein are a lil hard to get. I dont eat 3000 cals a day and i dont always get 200 protein. What Im looking for here is advice on when I should, lift, do cardio, eat, take supplemets, etc. Im currently using hydroxycut and a protein supplement. I've been doing the FT diet for about a week and a half and I lost like 5 or 6 lbs already, probably water weight mostly. I lift M,W,R and do cardio M-F, S. If anyone has any tips or adjustments they would be very greatly appreciated. Josh

When you first start a high protein diet, low carb, you will lose water weight through increased urination. This is due to your body getting rid of the Ketone Bodies that are transformed by the liver from oxidation of adipose tissue. And also glycogen depletion. Increase your protein intake. If you don't increase your protein intake, your body will sacrifice precious muscle tissue when amino acids are needed. This is especially true of BCAA's. Make sure you get proper aminos with each and every meal, even your protein shakes at this point in dieting. Good luck. Do your cardio immediately post training when glycogen stores are depleted. And do not decrease your weights. Doing cardio in itself will not really burn much fat. It takes a certain time and haeart rate before your body will even dream of burning fatty acids. That is why after weight training is much more optimal. There is eveidence that first thing in the morning is also good on an empty stomach, but that is your call. If you load up on BCAA's before cardio, you can "fool" your body into using fatty acids for energy. If it sees a large amount of BCAA's in the bloodstream, it will think it already is breaking down muscle tissue and revert to fatty acids for energy, and try to put you back in a positive nitrogen state.

also, on days when i dont lift, i usually do cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomahc, but when i dont would it still be beneficial to take protein before i do my cardio?

If there's one thing I've learned, it's never to exercise on an empty stomache. The myth that it burns more fat is completely wrong. In fact, there's no better way than to put your body in a catabolic state (muscle wasting) than cardio on an empty stomache. Always eat something before any sort of exercise (not right before, of course).

I have to take issue with that last post. I was of the same frame of thought. On my last competition diet, I worked out the last 6 weeks before my show on a totally empty stomach. I used no thermogenics, what I did was use BCAA's to my advantage. I loaded up on them pre training, and your body "sees" a large flood of BCAA's in the bloodstream. Goes, uh-oh, in a negative nitrogen state, already breaking down muscle tissue, better resort to fatty acids. I this time kept almost all my muscle and was ripped for the show. It is hard to train on an empty stomach, and under normal circumstances, I would not do it. But if you are trying to lose bodyfat in the fastest possible way, this is the way to go.

I hadn't taken BCAA supplements into account. What BCAA sup do you use, bb1fit?
I also want to mention that I don't think that you can get the same intensity from a workout on an empty stomache that you can when you've eaten - particularly first thing in the morning when your body has already been sans energy all night.
I might advise you to eat a protein only meal (this might be along the same alley as what bb1fit was talking about) so that your body was something anti-catabolic, but at the same time has no primary energy source to draw from.
