OK...this is it...I had most recently quit in June and started up again in July...I have quit to many times to count...so I got that part down,I know all the tricks.I have all the gums, patches and pills a person could ask for. What I need is someone to help me STAY quit.My husband isn't a smoker,he was an RT in the navy...his best advice is if you don't quit your gonna die...which I know in my mind is true...but not always helpful.I need to talk with other smokers that know what I'm talking about...does anybody know of a site that has a forum where people discuss smoking??Thanks so much!

I wish you the best. Trust me I worked for a time microfilming medical records for Roswell Hosiptal, they are a major cancer center for WNY. I saw first hand lungs that were from dead smokers-------------- A journey beigns with a single step. 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Don't know of any sites KC, but I quit smoking about 20 years ago and it was one of the toughest things I've ever done. It sounds stupid, but what finally seemed to work for me was when, on yet another trial at quitting, I told myself that I was now a non-smoker. Smoking just wasn't an option. Non-smokers don't buy cigerettes. It took me about 4 months before I pretty much lost the urge and haven't had one since. Now I truly am a non-smoker and wouldn't even consider lighting up again.
Good Luck! It takes strength and determination, both of which I know you have:) -------------- Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there. |

Fly has it right.
I quit about 10 years ago and it was just that final click in my way of thinking that made it stick. You have to act like a non-smoker. I also find that doing push-ups whenever the urge to smoke strikes helps. If you can't motivate yourself for your own sake, do it for your son who will need you around as he grows up and whose children will want to know their grandma.... -------------- We are what we repeatedly do. My idea is to go to a place where you can see the damage the smoke does....nothing like looking a lung cancer and related stuff to put a damper on smoking.-------------- A journey beigns with a single step. 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Well it helps to know that their are ex smokers on here...I just smoked my last one.I've seen all the gruesome pictures you could see...I've been beat up by the kids pediatricians for smoking..and I watch my husbands grandmother walk around with an oxygen tank. All reasons that I quit...over and over...it's the staying quit that is so hard. The only times I have quit for more than a couple of months was through my pregnancies.I've been smoking since the ripe old age of 13...so I've smoked more than half of the amount I've even been alive...so smoking has been who I am for far to long...BUT...I think I will do like fly says...I am now a non smoker...that's just who I am...thanks guys...for everything!

Congrats on quitting. I quit when I got fes up of taking smoke breaks outside the gym! I found that some good old rolling in the hay took care of most of the cravings!-------------- Thinking of a new signature line. Ivan Montreal Canada (City of Festivals) |

It's only as hard as you make it.
The fact is a craving last no more then 3-4 minutes....and when you first quit you'll get a real craving every 2-3 hours (2 hours is the half life of the nicotene in your body). So if you're awake for about 16 hours then that's approximately 30 minutes of cravings. That trails off after 3-4 days then you get cravings only a few times a day after that and it's much easier. The hardest part is when you run into a speedbump, for example...my son spent the night in the hospital a month after I quit. Had my wife slept there and I took my oldest home then I would probably be smoking today. However I offered to stay at the hospital with him knowing I wouldn't be able to leave the room, cause I wouldn't want him to wake up without me there. Guess I used my childs fear to keep me from smoking...kind of demented I guess. But it got me through that. BTW...it was nothing major he just had an infection that kind of came out of no where and the Docs wanted to observe him...but it's stressful for a parent. All is well now though. It's definately a mental challenge...I will have my moments where I get cravings still but they're like once a week now and are easily dismissed. |

Well....nobody asked me so it was easy...but i am tired of quitting...and getting through the first week...over and over...so this is it....it's been a week today...I WILL follow your example...not just hope to this time!!!

Don't you hate it when people pop up after being gone for a month and ask you if you successfully quit??
You're a bigger quitter then me...I only quit once back in May and haven't started again. :P |

Thats when I have the problem....a couple of months down the road...but I've got a better thought this time...not thinking I'm gonna try...thinking I'm gonna do...glad things worked out with your son...that is a stressful time...and it's great you had the forsight to stay at the hospital instead of go home and brood.

So true Stump... 8 years later the craving still surfaces infrequently... now i just ask myself "where did that come from?" and wait 3 seconds for the craving to pass.. no problem resisting..been there done that.... KC, if i can put smoking behind me, you can too.. it does get easier over time....just maintain your vision of being smoke free... |

LMAO..I thought I was the only one!..I used to go to my local store sweaty after a workout, and buy my pack of smokes. I quit 5 weeks ago, but had one last night. I am stressed out, I know thats no excuse. At least I bummed one instead of buying a pack. Today is a new day. -------------- lost 42 pounds since June 5th , 25 to go! www.thesoulcharmer.com |

Hi Lilac!!!!That's usually a pit fall for me...that I just had ONE....I'm at 6 weeks now...and going back to work has made the cravings strong but I'm hangin' in...what REALLY keeps me from smoking...when they come in from their cig break....they SMELL....bad breath, smelly clothes...so I smell my hands,I know its goofy but it works for me...and when I get home I smell my hair, and it still smells like my shampoo...I think it's important to do what works for you to keep being a quitter...just one can get you if you don't have your gaurd up...so be careful...don't let just one turn into just 2...and just on the weekends...and just on the weekends and at work...and so forth...good luck lilac!!!!

OMG KC, I saw this thread and thought you'd fallen off the wagon! Great to see you're still a non-smoker. You should feel very proud of yourself, I know it isn't easy!
And lilacdawn, it is really hard, but you just have to hang tough. Use KC as an inspiration and consider yourself a non-smoker from this day forward! |

Hi KC,
First of all - HUGE congrats on quitting smoking! Been there, done that 2 1/2 years ago (for the LAST time!). I know exactly what you're going through and I know you can do it! If you're looking for the best forum around, here's a link: http://quitsmoking.about.com/mpboards.htm. I hung out there a LOT and I know it was instrumental in helping me quit. Read everything you can - knowledge is power. I had checked out other forums early on in my quit, but I found the about.com forum to be by FAR the best - the support is amazing and you'll have lots of fun at the same time. If you'd like, you can also download a quitmeter to help keep track of your stats. It can run on your taskbar and with just a quick glance, will show you how many days you've been "smober", how many sickorettes not smoked, money and life saved, etc. For me, to have that constant reaffirmation of how well I was doing, helped me on numerous occasions when I was waffling in my resolve. Anyways, now that I've run on and on...lol Here's the link to download a quitmeter if you'd like. http://www.silkquit.org/sqmmiv/meter.aspx Feel free to email me if you want or need any support. I'd be more than happy to help! Maybe I'll even see you on about. Good for you!! I'm still doing pretty good since last May even though I'll admit...with the Holidays and somethings we're going through with my kiddos it's been a challenge lately...yes even after 7 months it's still a challenge. I understand now how people quit for 2 years and then start again. The hardest part at this point is remembering why I quit...as long as I can do that then I'm fine.
Hang in there! |

I hope everything works out with the kiddo situation...I keep hearing people say the cravings never really completely go away...not the best news in the world...but I really never want to have to quit again...so I think I'll make it...
so you hang in there too stump!!!!:) |
