16 Things it took me (not me, someone else) over 50+ years to learn
by Dave Barry, Nationally Syndicated Columnist 1. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night. 2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings." 3. There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness." 4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them. 5. You should not confuse your career with your life. 6. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. (This one is very important) 7. Never lick a steak knife. 8. The most destructive force in the universe is gossip. 9. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight savings time. 10. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests that you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment. 11. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 11. 12. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above average drivers. 13. A person, who is nice to you, but rude to a waiter, is not a nice person. (This is very important. Pay attention. It never fails.) 14. Your friends love you anyway. 15. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic. 16. Thought for the day: Men are like fine wine . . They start out as grapes; and it's up to the women to stomp the crap out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with. |

"10. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests that you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment."
This should be a law. some things it took me 34 years to learn: -I really WAS NOT smarter than my parents at 16. -If you truely believe that something is possible..it is. -And most important...the second you start to take what you have for granted,to think you should have more or be more...the powers that be will humble you quickly to rectify your way of thinking...no matter how bad you think things are...they can always be worse...always count your blessings. oh and ofcourse....put the mirror in FRONT of the treadmill...... |

I was just licking a steak knife the other day...I was recalling how my mother used to freak whenever she saw me doing that. It was kind of fun.
But #16 is my favorite. |

My mother would have a fit when I opened bottles with my teeth...she said they were very expensive...I wore braces for 5 years.

WOW 5 years what did they do to you LOL-------------- When I consider the short duration of my life, swallowed up in the eternity before and after, the little space which I fill and even can see, engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces of which I am ignorant and which know me not, I am frightened and am astonished at being here rather than there; for there is no reason why here rather than there, why now rather than then. Who has put me here? By whose order and direction have this place and time been allotted to me? The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens me. Blaise Pascal 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

I need them again LOL. Never wore the retainer and I have a "arnold" gap in my top front teeth, but getting them fixed is too much to spend right now.-------------- When I consider the short duration of my life, swallowed up in the eternity before and after, the little space which I fill and even can see, engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces of which I am ignorant and which know me not, I am frightened and am astonished at being here rather than there; for there is no reason why here rather than there, why now rather than then. I rally do not like the gap, but liked braces even less, had a few appliances that they had me wear, head gear yes KC lOL, and rubber bands LOL. So not too sure even if I could afford it I would.-------------- When I consider the short duration of my life, swallowed up in the eternity before and after, the little space which I fill and even can see, engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces of which I am ignorant and which know me not, I am frightened and am astonished at being here rather than there; for there is no reason why here rather than there, why now rather than then. Hey ding a ling mutt...the rubber bands were not part of a head gear...they were in my mouth...nothing on my head.My brother had the head gear...one time he ticked me off good...I pulled out the wire and popped it back on his face..cut his lip pretty good...he whooped my a**,but I got him first.
my husband just got braces off...he had those high eye teeth...he was always embarassed by them..he would rarely give a real smile...he finally convinced the navy to put them on him..he only had his on a year and a half...I know his were free, but they aren't as expensive as they used to be. |

My husband and his 2 sisters both had to have braces when they were younger. He stopped wearing his retainer bfore he was supposed to, and wound up having to have braces again. Then he had another retainer, and he finally got his implants. I'd say just for him, they spent at least 15,000 bucks.

WOW!!!!!now I know the military would NOT have put these braces on my husband if they were that expensive...I've looked into it locally for my son...2-3 thousand(depending on any dental work that may need to be done prior),and it's a contract,so the price couldn't go higher...even if he needed braces for longer than anticipated, the price wouldn't change..per the contract...granted his teeth aren't that bad off..but still!!
and don't wow me mutt...I just read your post wrong mr.!!! you're gonna get it for being so mean!!!! |

KC, the implants were really the most expensive part. They cost $6000, and that was at a reduced rate because he had them done in a classroom setting(teaching other dentists how to do it.)

LOL I just want the gap closed. I went in for a free first visit a while ago and they were talking about top and bottom braces for 14 months again!-------------- When I consider the short duration of my life, swallowed up in the eternity before and after, the little space which I fill and even can see, engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces of which I am ignorant and which know me not, I am frightened and am astonished at being here rather than there; for there is no reason why here rather than there, why now rather than then. Mutt, ever thought of just buying a pack of rubberbands and using them on your gappy teeth for an hour or 2 every night? It works..slowly,but it does work, and if you just want it to be a little smaller, I don't see how it could hurt.

Braces are pretty much a right of passage for kids around here these days. Work insurance covers 50% up to $2500 and the total cost is typically $5,000-go figure, coincidence, I think not. My oldest is now out of braces-she really needed them, little mouth, big teeth, she actually had to have 4 permanent teeth removed and now my youngest is in them-she had what we call bunny teeth at the front. It really is amazing what a difference they make once they get them off....but I'm not sure I'd have done it without the insurance and payment plans!

My navy dentist was Torquemada's cousin. Closest thing to torture I ever endured. I've had fear of dentists ever since. I have that Letterman gap between my two front teeth and have learned to love it. I also brush and floss 3 times a day so I don't have to visit those bastards too often. It's no wonder to me that dentists have a high suicide rate, -------------- Sometimes life is like herding cats. Charlie | |

Thats funny charlie...it must be a navy thing...any time my husband or his friends went to the dentist they would come out close to tears...they HATED it..so I know what your talking about.
braces are expensive...but like Fly said..they make such a difference...my husbands whole face looks different...and I love to see that big 'ole toothy smile!!! hmmm...I'm going to have to reread this thread and see how we got to braces here!! |

Don't think it's a Navy thing, I think it's a guy thing. My hubby hates going to the dentist, always has and he'll put it of until it's typically too late. I know far more men who seem to have this fear of dentist!
