I feel my back is my weakest to train, therefore I don't feel like I ever get a good strong workout because I am lacking in back strength, I have looked at www.exrx.com and found a few exercises to do, but what I am wondering is what would be the best exercise to build my back muscles for competition, preferrably my lats.

Barbell rows and deadlifts for mass and thickness, lat pull downs and chins for other work. I think you can really see a difference in those BB that do heavy compound lifts for back over those that do not.

When I consider the short duration of my life, swallowed up in the eternity before and after, the little space which I fill and even can see, engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces of which I am ignorant and which know me not, I am frightened and am astonished at being here rather than there; for there is no reason why here rather than there, why now rather than then. Who has put me here? By whose order and direction have this place and time been allotted to me? The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens me.

I can say this...my abs...I hated them(still not my favorite..but improving)I was so weak in the abs I couldn't get my shoulders off the floor..so I never got a workout,I wasn't even sore because I didn't have the strength to do anything worthwhile. But I've been doing them solid 3-4 times a weeks for the last 4 weeks with Amy's program...and I can feel them now!!!Just keep at it...as your strength develops you'll be able to do more...and get that "that was a great workout" feeling!!!

I really like seated cable rows for learning to 'feel' your back muscle contracting and hammerstrength pull-downs if you have the equipment at your gym. T-bar rows, bent-over rows, one arm rows, really work on feeling the contraction. I like lat-pressdowns for really feeling the lats working.

If you want to come over sometime I will put you through a back workout and maybe we can get you to feel the muscles a little better, it is hard to describe it online.

#1 Deadlift variations
#2 Bent over Barbell Rows, Dynamic Barbell rows, seated cable rows, supported t-rows
#3 Chin Ups/Pull Ups....do negatives or use bands if u cant do even 1 rep...pulldowns are a somewhat less than stelar alternative.....

The hammerstrength pulldowns are awesome--I had trouble feeling my back doing the work until I tried that machine.
