I have 2 girls 1 age 12 with ADD and another 10 with a Learning Disability (A Forum Of Dyslexia).
I'm going to start them off with 4 caps a day and see if it helps, lots of studies state it does. I'm just so tired of watching them struggle through school. |

MVP.....where did you find these studies...my son is ADHD...I would be curious to see them.My son was diagnosed in the second grade...after much debate from our side...once we realized how far behind his classmates he was(reading and writing at a kinder level)we decided to see the dr.he has just started the 4th grade...and brought home an AB honor roll report card.He has made dramatic improvements...but he is on medication. He is monitored regularly by his physician and has no adverse effects as of today...but I would prefer something more natural. My husband would prefer him not be on the medication at all...but it is hard to argue the results that the meds have made a huge improvement for him academicaly wise. His self esteem has also improved...not being in constant trouble in school and at home tends to bring out the joy in a child. But I would like to see something besides the meds.I'm not saying the only thing we do is give him pills and are done...we had to make alot of changes in our parenting style, and make many provisions for him along with the meds.

My kid is on Adderall at a 20 mg dose and will stay on it while taking the fish oil but if the fish oil show to be enough I will take her off the med's.
I typed in Fish Oil for ADD/ADHD in google and found a tone of stuff, most research was done outside the US, United Kingdom, South Africa and Australia. My kid is on Adderall at a 20 mg dose and will stay on it while taking the fish oil but if the fish oil show to be enough I will take her off the meds. I can't see where giving your kids fish oil would be a problem, it's just an EFA, which they'd could get from natural foods. As someone who knows nothing of ADD/ADHD, I'm curious how you're going to determine if the fish oil is enough, without the meds. You say she will remain on the meds while taking fish oil, so how will you know if the fish oil is effective on it's own. I'm all for finding alternatives, but I find it hard to believe that fish oil alone would be a replacement for a well researched medication. I'm not sure I'd be willing to take the risk of pulling her off her meds to experiment with the fish oil....Just my opinion..again, I know nothing of the severity of the condition...

I don't think you would be able to tell if the oil would be effective on it's own...we've discussed using a pill as a placebo effect with my son with his dr over the next few years...I'll bring this up...see what she(the Dr.) thinks and do some research on my own.My son takes concerta...a time release...so there is no way I could limit his dose on my own...and I certainly wouldn't do anything without consulting his dr...hope you aren't either MVP.

SFGMVP..fish oil has shown great promise with brain function. It has so many other benefits, that even without this problem it is a worthwhile supplement.
As far as placebo effect, if this works so be it. Placebo has been a potent weapon in all kinds of 'ailments' for years. :) -------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

It will take months to know if it will be just enough for her ADD and the only way to tell if progress is happing is if she is progressing, so it's on me to keep up on her and her schooling to see if we are on the right track!
If anything the combonation of the 2 Med's and Fish Oil can't go wrong! ============ Quoting from flyonthewall: I can't see where giving your kids fish oil would be a problem, it's just an EFA, which they'd could get from natural foods. Interesting coincidence....As I was doing my HIIT routine on a stationary bike, there was a magazine sitting on the ledge beside me. The lead story....ADD, alternative medicines....what are the odds of that. It is likely a hot topic these days and is probably on a lot of mag covers. This magazine happened to be one sponsored by GNC. Unfortunately I didn't have time to read the article.
And I agree with you, it certainly won't do any harm. I religiously take 4g/day....not sure it's improved my brain function though:) |

I am really interested about this fish oil thing. I was wondering SFGiantsMVP If this has helped at all with your daughters this is an older post so have you noticed any difference I am 25 and have twin brothers that are 7 that currently live with us. Their mother past away when they were 2 our father is disabled any ways one of my brothers has an extremely hard time in school we are currently trying to get him diagnosed we think he has add. It is very hard to watch him also struggle I hate the idea of having him on medication especially since he already shows some signs of depression he has emotional problems that probably stem from such an upsetting life. I also believe that the add runs in the family as I too have symptoms of adult add and was wondering if this would benefit not only him but maybe all of us. I am currently doing some research about it online and have not come acrossed anything about bad side affects.
Anyways I was wondering if you had an update about it. Thanks Trish |
