Hi,

I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in January and a marathon in may but also would like to incorporate some weight training to tone up my upper body and get some abs! What would you recommend? I'm running 5 days a week one of those days is a long run so i don't want a routine that will be too hard. Also, should i do legs? I would think running would be enough workout for my legs.
I am only able to workout 2 - 3 days a week for an hour max each time.
Thanks

This post doesn't belong in the power lifting forum but regardless, here's the same link I posted when you asked the same question in the other forum.

Lift heavy....perhaps powerlifting is exactly what will be great for you...you'll build more muscle and shed more body fat this way.....

train your whole body unless you plan to cut off your legs and run on your arms....

do heavy freeweight compound exercises...they are the most efficient way the train your body

Squats
Deadlifts
Standing Overhead Presses
Chin Ups
Dips
Lunges
Goodmornigs
Bent Over Rows
Dynamics Rows
etc
etc
etc

Lifting heavy will be good for you. Just like sprintwork and HIIT will be of great benefit for your conditioning in cardio beside your long endurance runs...

here's a basic program

Day1:
Squats or Deadlifts(rotate weekly) 3x5
Bench 3x5
Dynamic Rows 3x5
Heavy Crunches/Sit Ups 3x5

Day2:
Standing Military or Push Presses 3x5
Chin Ups 3x5
Lunges 3x5
Heavy Twists/Russian Twists 3x5

you can add couple more exercises as you see fit if you need it...
