Hi, I'm 5'10" and weigh 217 pounds. I'm trying to lose weight healthily, but I am confused on my calorie needs. On this site and every other site online, it says my calorie intake should be 2600-2800 a day! To me, that seems like a lot. If I let myself eat even 2000 calories a day, I won't lose weight. Right now I'm aiming for 1600-1800 calories a day, as well as 1 hr. cardio sessions 6x a week and 1 hr. weight sessions 3x a week. Any suggestions??

The calories listed on this site are a bit high. From your profile, it looks like you've already done a great job at loosing some wt, 40lb is impressive! if you're still loosing, introducing the cardio and wts should help. As you loose wt, your caloric need will need to adjust accordingly. I suggest you just keep doing what you're doing, eat healthy, at cardio and wts and monitor your progress. 1hr cardio session 6X/week may be a bit much, but it depends what your actually doing for that hour. The wt sessions will really help firm up your body and build calorie burning muscles as well!
Good luck and welcome to FT!

Thanks for your reply! I've actually been doing cardio and weights for awhile. Recently I've had to step up the cardio (I used to do 30 min. 6x a week) because I hit a plateau.

rather than increasing to 1 hr, why not try just doing something different, like HIIT 1X/week (interval training) or using a different piece of equipment....sometimes a change is all you need. what are you currently doing for your cardio?

I alternate between the elliptical and walking/running intervals on the treadmill. Occasionally, I swim.

That's great, variety is the best thing. Just make sure you're getting your heartrate up and you'll be fine. You probably don't need to up it to a full hour, maybe just add 5min/week to a max of 40-45min. Again it depends on your level of intesity.
