NEW YORK Dec 5, 2006 (AP)— The Board of Health voted Tuesday to make New York the first city in the nation to ban artificial trans fats at restaurants from the corner pizzeria to high-end bakeries.
The board, which passed the ban by a unanimous vote, did give restaurants a slight break by relaxing what had been considered a tight deadline for compliance. Restaurants will be barred from using most frying oils containing artificial trans fats by July 1, and will have to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of its foods by July 1, 2008.
Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said recently that officials seriously weighed complaints from the restaurant industry, which argued that it was unrealistic to give them six months to replace cooking oils and shortening and 18 months to phase out the ingredients altogether.
Trans fats are believed to be harmful because they contribute to heart disease by raising bad cholesterol and lowering good cholesterol at the same time. Some experts say that makes trans fats worse than saturated fat.
Associated Press Writer David B. Caruso contributed to this report.

And guess what? People are still going to die from heart attacks.
This is so retarded. You're not going to eliminate heart disease by banning one variable. What are they going to do next - induced forced exercise? How about citations for having you BMI too high? How come cigarettes are still legal?
I find it amazing how misplaced people's mind-sets are: they make transfats illegal, yet they have no problem keeping alcohol legal, and even making MJ legal.
Unbelieveable.....

It all comes to personal responsbility and the lack thereof. Until people make an effort to be educated they will not get it. My family is a good case study LOL. MY mom thinks 40g of protein is too much in a day and my dad is on a bread and bread products only diet! LOL

How about taking responsiblity for your actions.
If you eat too much you get fat. If you get fat and don't move, well hello heart attack waiting to happen. Or type 2 diabetes.
It is always so easy to take one 'item' and blame all our woes on it.

Fast food chains will find away around it.
Hydronated oils are still out there though.
Forced excercise lol.....i could just hear it, a siren go off....everyone would have to drop and do 100 push ups....or "Hans and Frans" will come in and take you to jail lol.

Forced exercise... I like it!!! DEADLIFTS FOR EVERYBODY!!!:dumbbell::angry:
The way I look at this whole thing is this: I think it's great that they're getting rid of trans fats. It's a start in the right direction. The ones benefiting the most from this are children. There are a lot of parents out there that will feed their kids a ton of garbage for one reason or another (more than likely due to the lack of nutritional education). The kids have no choice but to eat what their parents feed them. This, at least, allows the kids to avoid one potential carcinogen.
However, some people need to eat the 'bad' stuff. It's called survival of the fittest. You want to eat a terrible diet and die early? No problem, just don't come b!tching to me when you're having chest pains.
