Aboslutely. Great point, Mutt. The Great Generation.
Unfortunately, as the years go on, the sections in mondern school history books that cover the entire world-changing event known as WWII gets smaller. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. I often wonder, with the modern apathetic mentality worldwide, how people would repsond to such a horrific act, as well as the subsequent events, if it occured today... -------------- Michael That which does not kill me... would probably kill you. |

Hence the reason each year I try to keep the memory alive. And you can bet my sons will be educated on it. Very very sad to say, if it weren't for an episode of Malcolm in the Middle that I JUST watched last week, I would have had no clue what you were talking about. High schools today are lacking in SOOOOOOOOOOO many areas. :(

I was at Pearl Harbor about 23 years ago as a kid and the memories are as fresh today as they were the day I left. A very powerful place. I also recommend going if you can.

It is up to us parents to educate our children on the history of our country and the world for that matter.
I am so thankful that I have a couple of kids who want to know how we became where we are today and where we are heading for tomorrow. It is an amazing thing to sit with your 17 year old son and 13 year old daughter and have an intellectual discussion with him based on history, politics and religion. For them it isn't always about the latest speed metal bands and movies. I even thank God for my grunters who, even though they don't care too much today about historical documentaries, books and movies I still insist on them watching, they will value it as an adult and appreciate all that was taught to them. -------------- Bettia To be motivated, motivate others! |

Here are a few snips from the above article
Everett Hyland doesn't know how he stayed alive when almost everyone around him didn't. He was radioman aboard the Pennsylvania, which was in Dry Dock No. 1, and was helping transport ammunition to the anti-aircraft gun when a bomb exploded. Badly burned, Hyland regained consciousness 18 days later, on Christmas night. During that time, his older brother visited. "The only way he knew it was me was the tag on my toe," Hyland said. "He (later) told me we looked like roast turkeys lined up." Today, scar tissue covers most of his arms and legs. "I got a quick facial out of it. I used to be a freckled-faced kid," he said. "I don't have any lips. They could fix faces, but they couldn't build any lips." Four in five servicemen on the USS Arizona — 1,177 in all — did not survive the day. It was the greatest loss of life of any ship in U.S. naval history. They remain entombed in the battleship's sunken hull, which still seeps oil every few seconds, leaving a colorful sheen on the harbor water. many Pearl Harbor survivors were disheartened by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, "as if they had not done their job hard enough." -------------- Curl Jockeys, get outta the squat rack! PEARL HARBOR December 7, 1941
On Sunday, December 7, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack. When it was over, the U.S. losses were: Casualties: USA: 218 KIA, 364 WIA. USN: 2,008 KIA, 710 WIA. USMC: 109 KIA, 69 WIA.
