Is there any harmful effect on creatine absorption when drinking coffee, say 5 cups a day of hot,brewed,gooood coffee? Does it make creatine less effective?

Well you would be defeating the purpose of the creatine, since cafeine is considered diuretic.

Creatine vs caffeine excerpt This study was conducted to determine whether caffeine counteracts the ergogenic effect of creatine supplementation in repeated high-intensity exercise. Fourteen habitually active to well-trained male subjects volunteered for the study. The mean age (±SD) of the subjects was 21.5 ± 3.2 years and their mean body mass (±SD) was 83.0 ± 8.3 kg. Before subjects were allocated to groups they performed six repetitions of a six second maximal cycle sprint with 30 seconds of passive rest between each repetition. Subjects were then randomly assigned to either a creatine (0.35 g.kg body weight-1.day-1 creatine monohydrate for six days) or a creatine/caffeine (0.35 g.kg body weight-1.day-1 creatine monohydrate + 5 mg.kg body weight-1.day-1 caffeine for six days) supplementation protocol using a double-blind design. After six days of supplementation subjects performed the performance test for a second time. A two-factor multi-variate repeated measures analysis of variance was used. Both the creatine supplemented and creatine/caffeine supplemented groups produced substantial increases in peak power output, relative peak power output and work done in all six cycle sprints (P<0.05). In addition to this, total work for the six cycle sprints was increased (P<0.05), however percentage decrement across the six cycle sprints was not substantially altered (P>0.05). Interestingly, all of the above mentioned performance alterations were not different (P>0.05) between experimental conditions (ie. creatine Vs creatine/caffeine). The results of this study suggest that improvements in short-duration maximal cycle sprints following creatine supplementation are not altered by caffeine intake.

CREATINE & CAFFINE DON'T MIX This study, hot off the presses, perhaps shows why creatine doesn't always produce positive results for everyone. A group of Belgian scientists examined 9 healthy male subjects (ages 20-23 years) who were physically active but not highly trained. Before and after six days of creatine (.5 g/kg per day), creatine plus caffeine (same dose of creatine plus 5 mg/kg per day of caffeine), and placebo treatment, they found that muscle ATP concentration was the same throughout the experiment. However, phosphocreatine levels increased significantly (4%-6% in both the creatine and creatine plus caffeine groups). Knee extension torque increased 10%-23% only in the creatine group. The creatine plus caffeine and placebo groups didn't exhibit increases in muscle torque. This study demonstrates that caffeine can negate the ergogenic effects of creatine.
