Did anyone read the CARB’s article on the New York magazine? Why suddenly people think that carbs are so bad for you? As an Italian, I have been eating bread, pasta, and fruits all my life. I don’t have the ultimate body, but I’m pretty much on track. I just eat everythink in moderate portions. Also, and I don’t think that Italians and all other Mediterranean diets (which includes a vast variety of foods including lots of fruits, breads, pasta, etc…) have such a bad life expectance. Any thoughts?

I can't live without carbs. While I am eating a lot more whole grains, brown/wild rice ect. there are some times that only a bowl of spaghetti will do. The thing is, while pasta is high in carbs, the sauce is what kills you. I love homemade tomato sauce with lots of veggies. As long as you don't go overboard, what's so bad about it? Also, people need fiber. I think that there seems to be one big craze after another, and this is the one of the moment.

The carbohydrates are part of our macro nutritions.... Carbs, proteins and fat. That's what we need to function.
I agree that people tend to eat too many carbs (and especially the bad ones!) but we still need carbs in our diets.
Can you scan the article?

The article says also that the brown rice and wheat pasta behave not differently the white counterparts. Go figure where those info come from. By the way, this article is very pro Atkins.

Actually, effalunt, with pasta it's not just the sauces. Pasta is very heavily processed and ellicits one heck of an insulin reaction (especially considering one 6' diameter plate can run up to 100g of carbs). Of course if you add a fatty sauce like Alfredo, you blunt the insulin spike a bit, but then you've got a whole other problem on your hands with the calories and saturated fat. I try my best to stay the heck away of high-carb meals, even if I can sneak some protein and fat in there. Now, that said, carbs are not evil as some members of the media and nutrition community would have you believe (the same type but a different camp than those who preached against fat for years). Carbs are our primary energy source and our bodies function most effectively when we have solid carb sources in our diets. But unrefined carbs are the ticket. Maab is right, the GI of brown rice is not that far off from white and wheat pasta is not much better than white. But it still is better, particularly in cases of insulin reaction. Sometimes GI doesn't tell the whole story. Ultimately all grains are a little trickier than other sources of carbs because grains are almost always processed to some extent before consumption. Also, agriculture wasn't initially available to humans, so there's a camp that says our bodies never evolved to use them properly.

Not to beat a small point but our evolution seems to have recently become the staging point for supporting our latest nutrition fad. Our ancestors had a life expectancy of around 20-25 years so I'm not sure how valid that argument is.

But what did those ancestors die from? Childbirth? Viral/bacterial infections? Heart disease? Eaten by the very animals they were hunting? Poison berries? Who knows, and until that's figured out, it seems everything is speculation. :)
