I am 45, female and 207lbs@5'6". I need to lose weight and am doing so on Weight Watchers. I also want to get fit. I goto the YMCA 4 days a week on my lunch hour (m-th). I do 25 mins on the eliptical then I do the resistance machines, one day lower body/abs the next day upper body/abs. I do 2 sets of 12 on low weight -- the best I can do at this point, I'm pretty weak. This is what the guy at the YMCA told me to do anyway. I just started the resistance training this week but I've been doing the cardio for a while and I can tell it's made a difference. I am planing to take swimming lessons and swim at least twice a week. I have a ball, resistance bands and light hand weights at home and I'd like to get a 20 minute routine to do daily. I am a parent and it is very hard to get to the gym but I do try to go at other times.

I've read some posts and I've got to say that I am totally confused. Am I doing the right thing? I want to get fit, gain lean muscle mass and get toned.

Any comments helpful.

Hi sjack and welcome to FT. Looks like you're already on the right track with diet and exercise. Spend some time learning all you can by reading the many great posts or using the fitbuddy search tool. Looking at what you're currently doing, i'd suggest you keep with your elliptical workouts and adding swimming is good too, but make sure you're really getting a good workout with it. It's great that you're doing the machines, but when you're ready, say hello to free weights. With weight training, your trying to build muscle, so you have to push yourself with heavier wts (3 sets of 8-10 repitition at a weight that is tough enough to make it hard to finish that last set) Check out the wt training program here, the're really good.

Having said all this, i think you're off to a great start. What ever you do, don't get yourself in over your head to a point where you get frustrated and stop doing everything. It all takes time and with 70lbs to loose your looking at probably 8-10 months to reach your goal. Just keep plugging away and pushing yourself a little bit harder each week.

Hope this helps and if you have any specific questions ask away.

Yes you are difinetly doing the right thing My advice to you is Maybe get a fitness plan from here it can help you set up a workout routine. I would also try to do maybe 4 sets for exercises like 16rep 12 reps 10 reps 8 reps and try to up the weight a little as your reps progress. The cardio will help but switch it up a little like 3 days just weights and a little cardio and 2 days of hard sweatin cardio. This is just some advice hope it helps let me know Im no expert but if you need help setting up a fitness plan let us know by the way its free:big_smile: so keep at it it takes a while for the weight to come but soon you will notice a difference
