Nutrition on off days

So if my goal is ~4000cal./day on lifting days, what should I do on days off? Should i still take whey protein shakes? I have also seen plans that call for whey protein shakes prior to bed- I thought these were for after training? Can anybody clear this up.

Your nutrition plan is an everyday thing. Do not neglect it on your days off. Remember, you don't grow in the gym.
