I had the same worry when I first joined up. It does seem a lot. The trick seems to be (and I always hesitate in case I get stuff wrong...) *where* the calories are coming from as much as anything. Grab all those calories from saturated fats and simple carbs (sugars etc) and it will be bad. The proportions of protein, carb and fats needs to work out right.

Also (and again I may have got this wrong :surprised:) did you work out the calories required from your current weight or your target lean body mass? Could someone enlighten me on this one too? Should the target calories be LBM or current weight?

Cynann, I could be wrong and I would like clarification from someone more experienced here than me, maybe I misunderstood too!

What other things are you doing to get to where you want to?

Started walking 5 days a week 30 to 45 minutes on treadmill, 6 to 8 glasses of water and cutting out all fried foods!

Yep, fried foods are baaaad! One of the things I did was to keep a food diary, it really helped identify where I was going wrong in terms of calories in. I hadn't realised just how much fat was in a single tablespoon of mayo for example. From reading all the stickies and prowling the forum I've learned so much more than I knew before about nutrition. It's changed my relationship with food, I see it as a necessary fuel now and understand (better) what it does and what my body does with it. That really helps when it comes to fighting the late night muchies!

I have a calorie book so maybe just checking in it and writing everything down will get me started... I've been on and off WW and the counting pts. was driving me crazy.. Now just plan to get it done on my own.. One way or the other..
Exercise will be the key, but UGH! I hate it..LOL

I used to hate exercise, I mean really. I also ate all the bad things although I liked the good stuff too (didn't really need saying from a guy who needs to lose 44lbs!).

The weird thing is, now that I have my mind made up to lose this weight and get into shape, I... I actually like exercising! I know, it's insane. I miss it if I have a 'lazy' day, I think it maybe slightly addictive!

Keep at it, and if I can be any help at all let me know.

Hello, I just signed in at 181 and I'm supposed to eat 2044 calories/day. That seems like an awful lot but I will give it a try.

Calories are calculated based on your current weight...but the calories given here tend to be on the high side. I think when I first signed up I used that number as my maintenance and knocked 300 calories off for weight loss.

cynnan...that sounds about right for calories. I just figured a weight-loss calorie intake for my workout partner. He is 220 lbs and it has him taking in 2900/day.

I believe the formula is accurate as I followed the calories this week and lost 2 lbs :)

Also, try www.fitday.com. It'll really help tracking where those calories are coming from and it is FREE!!

Actually, that works out to 13 calories per lb. which fits right in with the standard 10 to 15 calories per pound suggested for weight loss. So, if you find you aren't losing you can experiment with using 10, 11 or 12 x your current weight. My understanding is the more fat you have to lose, you would use the lower numbers (10 or 11 x weight).

And fitday.com is great as conan said for tracking.
