I am heading home for summer in a couple of months, and my partner lives quite a distance from the gym. So as a result we are going to buy and install a home gym in one of the spare rooms.

Now I've done a little research and was rather overwhelmed. We already know we are going to buy a cross-trainer, and want (well I need) a large selection of weights etc, plus a bench (i've seen some that extend vertically for lat pulldowns) etc.

Sorry for the awful question, but could someone please list what it is I would require to purchase and what packages they'd recommend.

Really Appreciated.

well i shopped a long time and decided on a cheap good setup for free weights however i now envy and want a what the stores call "smith rack home gym" Its not a true smith machine but it looks real similiar. I saw this one at a sports authority here in FL for around $900 has peck dec, lat pulley system, and to pulleys on each side of rack for a bigger variety of work it was all free weight based oh yeah also had a bar to do the chin ups on on the rack looked you could do just about anything on it

Jaytori, that sounds rather good; I am in the UK however, any idea what sites are recommended, as I find most seem to be full of hype much like many creatine products etc so I am a little wary.

What is the good cheap setup you have?

I figure I need an adjustable bench (that can also do decline), free weights, but then unsure whats out there that can supply lat pulldowns other than a mutligym as you suggested. Would also love a cheap dip station.

I think I may have found a decent machine:

Any thoughts?

I would go with a set of free weights, bench, and a squat cage. Im not sure about in the UK but here the cage can be around $300 (not the type you find in the gym - they will be more but still a good one)
