Define "mid-squat"?

I wish everyone would get a partial amnesia and never use 'tone' ever again. (thanks Menance)

well that is referred to as parallel squat but to hold it i wouldnt reccomend unless doing light weights, and what would the purpose be in doing so?

yeah am not sure what exactly this achieves but the rep is definitely more intense during the hold.more specifically for the squat it's harder to arise from a stationary position than from a fluid motion.

I'd think that would put the knees in a pretty bad position and put a lot of unnecessary pressure on your knees.

Don't hold forever just enough to get a good squeeze then lift!

For me there I use a slight pause after decent especially to make sure I'm ready to lift, going to fast will cause a loss of form at least on me it does.

thank u very much jaytori, ecle and giant.i still have a lot of questions about the squat.like i was given to believe all these years that squatting beyond parallel is a cardinal sin.but i read somewhere that it's the way to squat.the author's rationale being u don't stop mid-way between a bicep curl so it should't be any different for a squat.what do u guys think?
