ok, I am keeping track of my daily intake of carbs, fat and protein as well as vitamines. I am on track with everything except for the protein. are there any suggestions on how to up it without many calories/fat BESIDES protein powder? I mean, is there any way to sneak it in with natural foods- i am eating plenty of meat and yogurt and eggs and I still cant come close. please dont tell me I have to buy protein powder. oh, and how much of an effect does not enough protein have on weight loss/toning?

You have to buy protein powder. You could also try skim milk powder and mixing more protions into one drink so that you can get as much protein as you would from the powder but it's obviously not as effective as the real thing. Just cut back on something else like: alcohol for me.

Add a container of low fat cottage cheese into your day, and some tuna. If you have alot of time on your hands eat 5-6 hard boiled eggs during the day. Pre-cook them and take them with you.

5-6 hard boiled eggs. Wouldn't that give you a heart attack?

Huh? David what?

One meal for me is 6-8 eggs mixed together with some spices and some veggies. That's good proteins.
It's true that I cannot do without my protein powder though.... I take two shakes daily and it goes with my total daily protein intake.

Just eat the egg whites, skip the yolk

Post what your protein requirement is and how close you're getting and what you're eating.

I'm sure it's right under my nose in the calculators, but can you talk more about figuring daily protein requirements?

Aim for 1-1.5 grms of protien per lb of bodyweight. If you train heavy go for the 1.5. Temember, there are a lot of natural sources to tap into before buying supplements.
Hope this helps.

To metraa, philia2 and others. What about those Omega 3 eggs? What's the deal with the yoke in those? Can you not 'skip the yoke' when you eat those? I'd post a whole new topic but I think this relates to this topic.

hey, thanks alot guys, I am currently adding some yogurt and instead of one whole egg for breaky I add an extra white...and I make sure that lunch and dinner both have a serving of meat/fish. this is upping my protein some...still only getting max 100g as opposed to 145...how much of a deal is it to be on the low side?

well I think that getting enough of it is rather easy....First We need to know what amount to eat already. Then we can make so suggestions. I eat about a dozen or so eggs a week (not counting egg whites) most likely more along 2 doz. My cholestral(spelling) is checked reg and it is fine. I also eat 5-8 lbs of chicken breast, 2-5 lbs of steak, not to mention tuna, cottage cheese, skimm milk. It is doable to get 200-250 grams a day. So let us know what you eat now and what you want to do..

Its already been said, but tuna and chicken breasts, fat free cottage cheese and yogurt. Even fat free and low fat cheese and milk. And of course your protein powders have very little fat.

Im having very big trouble with this too. I mean workout is like a cakewalk for me, I just do it. getting protein however is impossible, all my life my average has always been around 50protein a day, now Im suppose to jump to 180, damm..Living at home at the moment too so fridge is packed with other food. Doesnt help that I cant cook so I rely on my mother for that. I get 40g from my shakes daily so I guess that boost me up to 90.

Ima go out today and buy crapload of chicken breast, yogurts and tunas.

BTW is protein really a must?? I ask this cos my brother has eaten just about the same amount of protein food as me all his life yet he weighs 1.5 stones more than me, and I think Im a tiny bit taller than him too. The only difference between us is he worked out more than I do but if he lacked protein I thought it wont work.

Hello! I have a good tip for adding protein with NO fat! I know that a lot of the people around these postings are body builders, and I have no idea what you guys' stand point on caffeine and things are. However, if anyone drinks coffee throughout the day, add a quarter cup of nonfat or 1 percent milk to each cup of coffee. Also, protein comes in a lot of unexpected forms. Try having a low fat meat such as turkey breast with 2 smallish potatoes with a cup of lowfat cheddar, 2 tablespoons of salsa and a cup of corn (no butter!!!). See the amount of protein in these foods! One more thing, not enough protein equals loss of muscle. That is the drawback. You can lose weight, but it will be fat and muscle.

switch the corn to broccoli and I am right there with you!
Lowfat isn't necessarily the best, you need good fats like olive oil, flax oil, fish oil, nuts/seeds and avocadoes.

Good fat will help you feel fuller and more satisfied and keep your body runing more smoothly.

Thanks Amy. That makes me feel better about my diet. I eat a lot of fat. Most of it from nuts. I eat a bunch of almonds and stuff that says that it's like 22g of fat per serving. I know I shouldn't eat this all the time, but instead of ice cream and stuff, this is what I eat.

Broccoli is great! I can't eat much fat right now, because I am fairly sedentary and just getting started. I do agree that it is VERY impotant to eat healthy fats. Most people do not realize how important they are. I am restricted to 24 grams of fat per day, but most people can eat much more than that. Almonds are awesome, as are avacados. I don't think there should be any major restrictions on any partcular part of foods (carbs, fat, calories, etc...). It should be a healthy balance that makes you feel fulfilled while feeding your body. Any one have any suggestions for a high protein, low fat convenience food (like a snack?). Meals are easy, but those hungries in between can be really hard.

Good question solflwr..I'm in the same boat as you just getting started and all, and I'm searching for higher carbs/protein foods with no fat??? Pretzels are one yummy treat I've found!!! (0 fat,24g carb - no sugar, 9.3 protein per 30g serve). At least I can switch these with the usual potatoe chips and popcorn! Pretzels are still packed full of salt though...hehe :)

My protein intake (not listing other foods)for a regular day is something like this:

Wake-up: Shake (20g)
Mid-morning snack: Eggbeaters (24g)
Lunch: Chicken Breast (35g)
Afternoon snack: Tuna (20g)
Post-workout: Shake (20g)
Evening: Smoked Salmon (22g)
Evening Snack: Eggbeaters (24)

Plus some assorted small amounts of protein from oatmeal, brown rice, etc. I get 180ish per day.
