Alright so by doing nothing all day my body burns 1700 calories.

I burn 700 at the gym so all in all i burn 2,400 calories.

I eat 1600 calories giving me a deficit of 800...okay right??

Then I was told by somebody that if I eat 1600 and burn 700 at the gym I am only consuming 900 calories therefore putting me into starvation mode?? That makes no senes..is this true? I thought eating 1600 cals was eating 1600 cals...

If your body needs 1700 just to exist and you feed it 1600, then burn 700, yes you are now consuming 900... when you calculate your basal metabolic rate, you have to add in activity level, so you get your base calorie needs - which is probably 1700 plus about 600. (just guessing, don't quote me:)), so now you are at a base requiement of 2300. NOW reduce it by exercising off 700 and you are at 1600....there you have a slight deficit, but enough to cause fat loss, most likely. i would say consume more calroeis than 1600 and you will see better results.

I know this is all so confusing, but really if you aren't eating enough, and most people aren't, you force your body to make priorities - the priorities it will make are :

Get rid of muscle, because muscle is metaboliocally hungrier than fat (which , in turn results in metabolic slow down)

Store incoming calories as fat because it perceieves famine and will do anything it deems necessary to survive a future famine (again, slowing metabolsim).

So, you may see the scale go dwon, but you will notice you are feeling mushier and mushier....

Another thing that will come into play, which I think is even more important than calories in vs. calories out, is what type of calories youa re eating. Your physique will look very different eating 2300 calories of good, clean, nutrient rich foods than it will eating 2300 calories of processed, fatty, less nutritional choices. This is where clean eating and ratios come in.

I would suggest looking at the WSSC challenge food plan and giving it's formula a whirl - it has been very effective for al the challengers in helping them lose bodyfat and inches. And ususllay you aren't hungry on that plan, either!

So, not that one plan is the best for everyone, but it is a good starting point because it gives you clear guidelines on clean eating and it gives a reasonable caloire formula.

Okay a did a BMR calculator it said my BMR=1479 another one said BMR=1400....this would seem to make sense since I am 143lbs.

I got the 1700 by calculating caloric needs with the sedentary option.(Then just log my exercise)

Which is correct...I thought the equation for a deficit was calories consumes-calories burned...either way I'm at

1600-2100=500 cal deficit
1600-2400= 800 cal deficit

You aren't sedentery if you workout and burn 700 calories.
it is better to create a slight deficit - through exercise and calories, maybe 300 total or 500 max, you create too big of a deficit and you spin your wheels.

Again, if you are eating the wrong types and amounts of foods, it won't matter if you hit the calorie deficit on the head or not.

1400 cals is WAY too low for for a 142 lbs woman. I am eating 1750-1850 per day for the last 4 weeks, (maybe 5) My metabolism has increased to an incredible rate and my pants are actually falling OFF. I have had to move my belt 2 loops! You dont need a 800 cal deficit! Your body will think it is starving and hold onto all the fat it can.

I'm not EATING 1400 cals. That is my BMR.

I eat 1600 calories of all good foods...

33 grams of fat, 253 grams of carbs, 111 grams of protien

I know that isn't an IDEAL ratio but I'm working on it and its not too shabby :)

So my question I just need to know TRUE OR FALSE
Figurativly speaking I eat 1600 calories all day and then go to the gym and burn 700....does that mean that I truly only ate 900 calories?

Bascially I was told every calorie I burn at the gym I need to eat back.

So if that is the case and I ate 1600 calories and burned off 700...I would need to come home and eat another 700 calories

OK let me see if I can explain.....to lose weight you need to burn off/eat less than you need. FOr EXAMPLE say if you ate 2000 cals a day and maintained you bodyweight, neither lost nor gained a pound. To lose one lb a week you would cut/work off 500 cals a day for 7 days. at the end of the week(7 days) you would have a total cal deficit of 3500cals, or 1 lb.

I say cut/workoff cause if you do both you go below a certain calorie level and that is bad...hope that made sense.

Lol a few people at my gym.

Sorry for being such a pain but this is just killing me trying to figure it all out.

Lets start from the beginning :)

I'm 5'4 maybe a lil less
143 lbs
BMR=1400

Recommended maintenance calories for sedentary days=1680
Recommended fat loss calories for sedentary days=1344

maintenance calories for activity=2170
fat loss calories for activity=1736

So on the days I exercise I should be eating around 1800 calories and on off days I can go down to 1600? Am I getting this?? :)

But according to what I've been told on the days I'm exercising even if I am eating 1800 calories and burning 600-700 my "net calories" are falling below the recommended 1200 guidline.....I thought that was just for calories consumed and not net calories

Thanks for tyring to help me out here guys I really appreciate it

To be honest with ya...I think you are over thinking this..you can eat less on days you do not lift etc. I think if you ate about 1750-1800 a day you are good to go.
