My nutritional analyzer says that I need 150g of protein a day. I have heard that the average 140 lb woman only needs about 60g per day. I weigh much less than that, only 120lb. I do jog every day for about 30-40 minutes, and I would like to tone up my abs. But, is it really neccesary that I get that much protein? I heard that too much protein can be toxic to your system. Why in the world would anyone need to eat this much meat?

Nitrogen and nitrogenous wastes can build up in the body (especially the kidneys). The only possible way I can figure this happens is because of dehydration. If you drink enough water you'll be fine. If I ate 300g of protein everyday for a month and only drank 8oz of water a day, I'd say it would be likely that something bad can happen. The point: Protein is toxic when your body can't flush out the wastes properly. Chances are, every normal human being will be OK eating a lot more protein.

I would much rather err on the high side of protein than not enough. We all know the consequences of not enough, loss of lean tissue, worse fat to lean mass ratio, thus more chance of the Yo-Yo syndrome for dieters and trainees alike. Water as JB says is essential. I would say the chances of protein being toxic are very unfounded but for a select few with other problems to begin with. On a regular basis, I take well over 100 gr. of protein above my bodyweight, and this does not include aminos with meals or during training. I like to think I am healthy as the proverbeal horse!! Don't buy into everything you read. You can pick up one magazine for instance, read it and have a convincing argument one way, pick up another right next to it and have a convincing argument the exact opposite way.

Our bodies are made up mostly of water and protien. Also refering back to your original post jamieniebaum, You asked, "why in the world anyone would want to eat that much meat?" Protien is found in alot of fods such as, cottage cheese, eggwhites, tuna, tofu, lentils, mackeral, lean beef, pork, and chicken breast, as well as supplements. Hope this helps your understanding a bit more.
