Today someone mentioned that because I have been sprinkling flaxseeds on everything that it may lead to thyroid problems? They also commented on my steamed cauliflower & brussel sprouts that I may be doing myself damamge. Is this nonsense??

Raw flaxseeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, which are converted in the body to thiocynanates. Thiocyanates can inhibit the uptake of iodine by the thyroid, but this is not generally a problem when iodine is plentiful in the food supply. Cooking flaxseeds destroys the cyanogenic glycosides. So it should be toasted for 10-15 minutes, at 250-300 degrees in the oven. The cauliflower and brussel sprouts only do damage if you already have a thyroid disorder or your body has an iodine deficiency. They have anti-thyroid substances and may suppress the thyroid function. Unless you have a severe thyroid disorder or your body is deficient in iodine then I would not worry about eating them, just don't over-eat them.

Hmm,,,I was just checked for my thyroid. Although I have a lot of symptoms of hypothyroidism, my test came out pretty normal. Now I am a little afraid of flaxseeds. I buy the ones already ground & I take about two or three tablespoons a day. I also eat cauliflower or 6 brussel sprouts once every day at one of my meals. Maybe I should cut out these three things!:surprised:

I do have hypothyroidism and use flaxseed and it doesn't seem to have any reactions thus far..I guess it can depend on the individuals body, but I have never heard of it having an effect.

Anybody know why my name shows up as null sometimes? Anyways I just wanted to say I use flax seed oil every day and I think very highly of the stuff, and I'm thinking of adding ground flax seeds as well. I don't think that flax seeds, cauliflower or brussel sprouts are going to hurt you, they are more likely to prevent problems than cause them.

It shows up as null when the site times you out. I think it's just a glitch that happens every now and again.
