So for years I played hockey and some days I would feel good and other days I would feel like I just couldnt wake my body up for the game and couldnt shake the cob webs out. I have always warmed up before the game but was always afraid too much would deplete my energy.
Recently I watched some of the P90X videos and there is an awesome warm up routine before every video. Nothing special or out of the ordinary (knee lifts, running in place with high knees then wide knees and low knees with heels to the butt). Then it goes into jumping jacks and then run lunges. This lasts for about 3 minutes and then it goes into stretching whatever body part you are going to be working out.
Now, everytime I work out and do the warmups, I have the energy, I am alert and can put 100% into my workout, rather than waiting to get warm from the workout. When I am tired and don't feel like working out, I know it will only take 3 minutes for that feeling to go away and be into it again.
I wish I knew this when I played hockey. Not to mention that when you are warm and stretch, you prevent injuries. I have bad shoulders and heating them up before I work them out seems to be keeping me off the disabled list.
I am writing this post because from my experience many people dont see the benefit of the warmup and stretch and either dont do it or dont put enough effort into it.
