This isn't a question so much as a word of encouragement to fellow newbies. I've played around with weights on and off for the last few years, but made a real commitment this summer to see it through. I started out like I always have in the past, not keeping track of how much weight I was lifting from week to week and always sacrificing form for weight. My pattern was always lift hard for a few weeks, see little improvement, get discouraged and slowly stop all together, so for anyone out there who is discouraged-I've been there! The point is, I've switched gears and really kept track of the progression of my lifting and I've only allowed myself to lift what I can while MAINTAINING PROPER FORM-this makes a huge difference so if any of you out there and feeling frustrated, please make sure you're maintaining proper form. I've seen the difference it can make!

I disagree with you when you say maintaining proper form. You should constantly be working on your technique, not just maintaining it.

I think you misunderstood me-of course your workouts should be progressive, but I have seen the results (or, rather, lack there of) of trying to lift too heavy. I know in my case, when I went too heavy, I may get the weight up but I would find myself swinging weights and sacrificing solid movement-that's what I was saying, make your movements precise and, if you can't, you're probably not ready for that much weight.

Good insight. It is critical to remember that when we lift, we are working on more than one isolated body part.

And yes, one of the easiest ways to give up is to get injured.

Keep up the good work!
