Help! I know the benefits of cottage cheese, but just can't eat it! Does anyone have a good snack food that's high in protein, portable (i.e. to refrigerate at work), low in fat and a good source for an afternoon pre-workout snack?

Most of the MRP's I've investigated are very high in sugars. Do you have any recommendations?

Well I could not stand cottage cheese till I heated it up with garlic and put it over a sweet potato. It made it nice and cheese. Did not have that foul taste. You could cook some chicken or turkey the night before. Also an MRP (meal re-placement) is always good.

Look for Biotest's Low-Carb Grow!. That's a very low sugar and carb MRP.
I didn't think I liked cottage cheese, either, but I ate some the last couple days, just spooning the stuff right out of the container and it wasn't half bad. I get the feeling my taste buds are perishing from all the clean food.

Try adding lemon juice or fruit to it.I love cottage cheese so I don't really have that problem. What about yogurt. It is portable and good.

I hate cottage cheese myself until I figured out how to eat it...I blend it in a blender with two sweet n low packs and the juice from a can of fruit (no sugar added) blend till smooth and pour on top of fruit - it's delicious!

I made the mistake of trying to eat fat free cottage cheese. Talk about nasty. The low fat...that's much better. Every brand is a little different so you really just have to try them out. Definitely agree with the addition of fruits!

Some other snack ideas -
*Keep milk in the fridge and make a protein shake. Tupperware makes excellent containers that you can really "shake" so the protein gets mixed well.
*Hard boiled eggs

I agree, the no fat is nasty but the lowfat is good. I thought the cottage cheese was spoiled or something. Never made that mistake again....lol

I happen to love cottage cheese, so I guess I'm lucky....but here is my absolute favorite way to eat it. It might sound a little gross, but it's really quite good, and it gets around the texture, if that's what's throwing you off.
You'll have to play with the proportions, but I mix about a half cup of cottage cheese, a few spoonfulls of sugar-free, fat-free pudding instant pudding (flavor of your choice) and a dash of skim milk with a hand blender and let it sit in the fridge until its smooth and creamy. I imagine you could use a regular blender if you don't have a hand blender.
Sometimes I mix in extra protein powder if I'm making chocolate or vanilla (you may need more milk if you do this), and cinnamon is great in the french vanilla flavor pudding. I use it as a dip for fruit, a spread for toast (chocolate is fantastic with peanut butter on toast) or sometimes I mix some cereal in a big bowl of it for a treat. It's very satisfying and a great source of protein and calcium!
Good luck!

I like to mix yogurt and cottage cheese together. I like the taste of cottage cheese alone but with the yogurt I only taste the yogurt and get the benefits of both.

Kab63~ is that the powder instant pudding you're adding or is it the pudding that's already mixed up? (did that questin make sense?)

Anyway...I just always put cottage cheese in my protein pancakes but I just bought some Smuckers sugar free, reduced fat strawberry preserves. I think I'm gonna try to mix the 2 up and see how easily it goes down.

Carolina,
Is use the sugar-free, fat-free instant pudding powder. Usually about a teaspoon or two (depending on brand and flavor) will do the trick. If it gets too thick, it's easy to fix by adding more milk or even water, if it's too thin, I add more pudding powder or protein powder. I hope you like it! Chocolate is just about sinful.
BTW, the sugar free jam in cottage cheese is great too. I've eaten lots of low-fat cottage cheese with a teaspoon of sf strawberry jam.....yummy! Also good on top of oatmeal or toast.
