I've been following the program designed for me (weight loss & definition, intermediate level, 3 days/week) and it has the following muscles grouped together:

Chest/Shoulder/Triceps/Abs
Back/Biceps/Forearms/Abs
Legs/Calves

A friend of mine suggested that opposing muscles should be trained together particularly chest/back together and biceps/triceps together. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Rebecca if you are lifting 3 days per week you may want to try a total body routine.

Try a circuit type program. Probably best for weight loss. Some strength and much stamina gained.

{Singing} The brachilis is connected to the... bicep... The bicep's connected to the... anterior deltoid... the anterior deltoid is connected to the... {/singing}

That's the song we sung every morning in PT pre-school. I'm told there's another one with "leg bones, etc", but I don't see the point.

Anyways, all your muscles work together. There is no right or wrong way to do it. Russian powerlifters dominate the circuit while training every muscle group twice a DAY, while Ronnie C has a different day for each muscle or part of a muscle, and he somehow manages to get EVEN bigger each year.

I believe that for strength one shouldn't seperate further than upper/lower or total body. However, I think the type of split you do is minutely important. More important are the sets, reps, exercise selection, and most importantly, effort.

For your goal of fat loss, I would recommend total body, especially if you are working out 3 days a week. I also like circuits for this.
