I want to lose about 60 lbs, I weigh 280 now and want to get down around 220..
Should I be doing more reps less weight?
How much cardio should I do daily?

lighter reps and less weight is akin to doing cardio - do a routine where you lift for 8-12 repititions and use a weight that is a little difficult but not form breaking.

Start out doing cardio 20 minutes, 3 times a week and gradually add on time OR additional sessions, ease into it.

All this exercise is great and will help - but if you don't get your eating plan in line you won't get great results - much progress depends on the right fuel at the right time, in the right amounts.

80 pounds by Jan 1st, 2008? That is 6 months... you might be reaching a bit - I would aim for 50-60 pounds by the new year, and continue into the new year with your new, healthier lifestyle and take off the other twenty pounds. 1-2 pounds a week is average, safe rate of weight loss.

Start getting in a walk every day, it will help raise your metabolism. Then sign up for a program here and get into the gym (or at home, if you have your own equipment).

Stop eating fried foods and junk foods and track what you eat for a week at fitday.com - that will give you an idea of how many calories you are averaging in a day. Then you can adjust up or down from there. If your goal weight is 200 and you weigh 289, I would start aiming for 2,500 - 2,800 calories a day, depending on what you have been eating - you don't want a drastic calroie increase or reduction.

Start eating 5-6 small meals a day, with each meal containing lean protein, complex carbohydrates and a little good fat. read up in the nutrition forum for good food lists and ideas.

Good luck and welcome to freetrainers - I hope the people here can help you attain a healthier lifestyle and your fitness goals:)

Start by walking 20-30 minutes and gradually build up to 45-60 minutes a day walking. This is besides lifting and cardio, and can be accomplished in shorter bouts throughout the day (3/ 10 minutes walks, etc).

Drink when you are thirsty, 8-10 glasses a day is pretty good, if you feel like you want more, have more. You also get fluids from the foods you eat. I doubt you will/can drink so much water that it would be a problem.

Set goals, write them down and reread them every day.

I weigh 250lbs....I would like to lose atleast 50 by September. I have never been on an excercise plan before other than walking. I don't really have the money to join a gym. What kind of things can I do at home?
