pre-bedtime protein shakes

I was just wondering what type of protein shakes to take before bedtime. I read a post here earlier and there were conflicting views as to which type of protein is better (whey, casein, egg... etc). I've read that whey isn't good for a pre-bedtime shake because it gets absorbed too fast, and that slower proteins are probably better suited.

I'm currently taking Potein PM from interactive nutrition, http://www.interactivenutrition.com/products/proteinpm.php(it is a blend of whey, egg, and casein proteins). I'm wondering whether this is the optimal mix, or should i use something like GlycerLean from Designer proteins (which is a time-released whey protein).

And what do growth hormones do exactly? I don't know much about that.

Save yourself some money...just get a good multi species protein, i.e....whey isolate, casein, egg, hydrolosates and mix in a tbsp. of flax oil. This will slow down the digestion. Also another trick is to have a shake made up with ice, have it by your bed. If you wake up durning the night(not on purpose), have a chug each time. Drink the rest in the morning. That expensive nightime protein time release crap is a money sucker.

Honestly, any protein before bed is better than none. Ultimately a blend is best, but the differences aren't going to be earthshattering. Don't stress too much about what kind of protein you're taking, just as long as you get something.

Thanks for your suggestions. I've read that more growth hormones are excreted when you sleep then any other time, what do they do exactly? Promote fat loss? Muscle growth?

Since my dogs get me up around 3 in the morning (sometimes earlier!), I usually wolf down a protein bar then. At least I get some protein and get the internal furnace going early. Doesn't seem to adversely effect my ability to fall back asleep either.

From what I've read, you must consume protein shakes within a half hour of mixing as to avoid bacterial breakdown of the protein? Correct me if I'm wrong?

question, will soy milk slow down digestion of protein at night in place of skim milk? My stomach doesn't handle lactose too well.

Better to use fats. Flax oil will work great, and add some fiber to your whey shake if you are using pure whey.(flax meal is ideal here). If you are on a gaining cycle, you may sub heavy cream in place of the flax. Makes for a great tasting shake and a perfect sub for flax on a gaining regimine. (some saturated fats have a positive effect on testosterone).
