Hello to all...I just joined and am looking for help...I was physically fit for most of my life until I was in a serious accident...I lost the use of my left leg for the most part...I have been basically home and hospital bound for the past 5 years, and due to that, I have gained so much weight that I don't know really where to start...I don't really know much about nutrition...I am a 43yr old woman with 3 teenagers...I have always weighed heavy even when I was skinny...I tell people that our family was built for power not speed...anyhow at my lightest in my adult years I weighed in at 155lbs, and I am now at my heaviest weighing in at 235...I have just received a brace specially made for my left leg and foot, and I am ready to try to regain my life...I am ready to exercise and diet, but I also want to know if there are any other things I can include in my diet to speed up my metabolism etc...I am going to need all the help I can get!!! Thanks...

You have a big journey ahead of you! Start by setting some realistic goals and getting moving.
Eating six small, balanced meals will speed up your metabolism, as will drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
Ease into a walking program with time or distance goals that you set for yourself.
Resistance training will raise your metabolism. Look at the Exercise Program link at the top of the page and follow it's prompts - it will generate a workout for you based on what equipment you have available and what you are able to do.
Pick some healthy affirmations to repeat to yourself when you feel negative or stuck - I repeat "My metabolsim is higher every day" whenever I feel myself starting to criticize or doubt. Some other good ones are " I choose healthy foods to fuel my body", "I am a fit and athletic person". it doesn't matter at first if you believe these things or are just saying them - your brain can't tell the difference, it just listens to what you tell yourself most often. this has been proven by research - think like a winner and you become one.
There are tons of informative posts in all of the forums, as well as a search engine called 'fitbuddy' at the bottom of the screen - check the FAQs and fitbuddy before asking a question that may have already been answered at length. If you can't find the info you are looking for - then post a question.
Good luck and welcome to freetrainers!
