Tomorrow my family and I are leaving for Madison, WI because my little sister who is 15 is having a major spinal surgery. The surgery is 6-8 hours long and is pretty dangerous. This is a very hard time for me, and if at least a few of you could keep her in your thoughts and/or prayers it would mean so much to me. Thanks, and hope for the best!

That's so sad she's so young and already having to go through something so major. I pray things will turn out for the best. And yes, keep us informed!

Ditto and my famlily will add you and yours to our prayers. If you do not mind what kind of surgery is she having?

I just want to thank everybody so much for all the support I've been given, it really does mean a lot. My sister's surgery is tomorrow morning, and I will be sure to give updates as frequently as I can. The surgery she is having is called a spinal infusion, and she needs it because she has a major curve in her spine that needs to be corrected. Thanks again everybody, and I'll be sure to let you all know how everything goes!

Here's an update for everybody- my sister has been in surgery for almost 4 hours now, and as of the last report she is still doing great and they have started to insert the hardware into her back. Thanks again for all your support, and keep hoping for the best!

Here's another update-
Right now my sister is in the ICU where she will stay for about another two days. She's doing amazing for everything she's just been through. That could be because of all the pain killers she's on though. She's getting better and better though, and has already had a decrease in her morphine dose! I'll keep the updates coming for everybody.

Haha Bill, I'll be sure to watch out for it. Well, my sister was discharged from the ICU today, which is great news. She really is recovering much quicker than anticipated! She's still really really tired, but she's becoming more alert and responsive everyday. They're even talking about getting her out of the hospital one day early!

Yes, drieman, the surgery was extremely successful! My sister had an s-like curve in her spine that would have eventually crushed her internal organs. The surgeon was able to make it almost 100% straight again, which is phenomenal! She's got a lot of hardware in her back now though, which will take some time to fuse to her bone and fully heal (about 6 months) so it'll be awhile til she's back to normal, but the sooner we can get her out of the hospital the better!

Give your sister a gentle hug when she is a bit better. My brother had the same surgery about 28 years ago. I know... long time. But, I can relate to your worries and her experience. She is recovering quite quickly I must say...
Best wishes for a comfortable recovery.

Sorry guys, I know it's been awhile. I've been spending all day at the hospital, and I've been sleeping over a few nights too. Well, my sister's doing great! Today she's much more awake, it's like she made a complete turn around! Today she smiled and gave a small laugh for the first time since the surgery. She's also on a lot less pain medication now. She leaves the hospital on Tuesday, and then goes for six weeks of rehabilitation, so it'll be awhile til she's home, but at least we'll get out of the hospital!

I will also give my sister a hug for you Mel! Thanks!

Wow Jessica, I remember, back when my brother had his surgery, he was in the hospital in a rotating bed for about 3 days, then regular room for about a week or more where they forced him to get out of bed and move about. Then he came home in a half body cast for 3 months and I used to go on short walks with him after school. He had(s) scoliosis and when he stood or sat "straight", his left shoulder was about 2" above his right and tipped forward. He has a titanium rod fused to his spine. Like I said, that was about 28 years ago though. Maybe the technology has improved?
Like I said before... Best wishes and now I will add patience to the recovery!

Well, my sister has Cerebral Palsy, and she can't walk, so they had her sitting up in a chair after the first couple of days. I don't know if the technology has changed or not though. I think the main thing that made her surgery go so well was the pain control they used. She was on an epidural for 3 days, and then went right to oxicoidone(sp?) She's doing well now though, the only problem we're having with her now is her seizures have greatly increased since the operation and we can't figure out why. Once those are gone though, I think we'll be okay.

I also forgot to add that my sister had(s) scolosis too, and she also got the titanium rod fused to her spine. She had an S-shaped curve in her spine that would have eventually crushed her internal organs if it was not fixed.

Im hanging in there jess, thanks for askin, but i still have a battle ahead of me that will be easier when i get some of this weight off. Im thankful for every waking moment and for the love of my family and friends, both here at home and at freetrainers. Im blessed with people i have become friends with here, its such a great place to ask for help when you need it and a great place to meet new and interesting people, for example, i bet you didnt know that one of the moderators " 7707MUTT " raises tibetan yak on his property in new york and sleeps with an elmo doll, hahaha just playing, anyways, thanks for the kind words of concern, and dont worry, someone up above's got her covered, she'll be ok ........:)
