Hello everyone,
I am impressed with the site. It seems that there is an inordinately large amount of helpful information to wade through. I'm excited about that and hope to find lots of info and support during the journey toward my goals.
A little history, for those interested. I started out at about 385-395lbs. I wore a size 54 and I was miserable. Made a decision and got started dieting and doing light exercise videos; by a year later I had lost 125 lbs. Since then I have had a total of 33 lbs of excess skin removed surgically because it was hanging EVERYWHERE on my chest and lower torso. I had the lower half of a body lift 8 years ago, but wasn't able to afford the top half. Recently however (in Nov.) I had my chest and underarms fixed. I feel like weight training can do some good now as I don't have all that redundant skin to hide results. TIME TO GET BUSY!
Now I fluctuate back and forth between an additional 10-15 lost or gained, but never more in either direction. (oh and I've kept the weight off for over 8 years too btw)
Now that my skin and underlying fascia have been tightened everywhere I'm ready to build and tighten muscle and motivated to do so, but where to begin? I'm a nurse and while we thoroughly cover anatomy and physiology in school we don't cover the exercises to develop that sexy musculature!
I've considered hiring a trainer, went to Bally's and YUCK! That was horrible. I felt like I was buying a car not shopping for fitness. It felt like: "Here! Sign this contract with your blood!" Didn't seem like they were interested in helping me at all, but perhaps rather interested in a commission or something. I wasn't sure what I wanted, but I didn't want to commit to something expensive for a year if I didn't like it or didn't get results.
I tried a smaller local gym and they seemed uninterested in MY goals and tried to sell me a "program that works for everyone". Y'know... maybe I'm an individual and need things a little different than the next person.
Now I've landed here. I didn't really want to work out in front of others anyway. See what I can do at home and then rethink the gym situation later.
I'm especially interested in having really defined pecs, arms and shoulders. I'd like to tighten and tone the abs too, but don't expect washboard.
Nice to meet everyone, sorry for the novel-length intro. :)
