Great news! It just gets easier each day.
10 years after i gave it up, it hits me occasionally out of the blue. I wait 5 seconds and its gone. Welcome to the ex-smokers club -------------- The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking. Albert Einstein (1879–1955) |

Congratulations! I gave it up on January 7 of this year. The only time I think about it is occasionally to think "Wow, I didn't want a cig. at all today!" funny. Don't you just feel so much better? Oh, and don't the smokers around you reek so bad? ha ha. No offense to the smokers of course. ;)
Way to go!!! GOOD FOR YOU!!!! |

Thank you so much. Drinking lots of water and chewing gum are all working so far for me. I find the smell gross now to be honest. My gf is 11 yrs younger than me and has been so very supportive and totaly made it worth my while to quit. lol

That's so awesome gs. My poor assistant at work here smokes. She always tends to come in my office IMMEDIATELY following her smoke break. Luckily we have a friendly relationship and I can tell her to come back when she "airs out". lol. I just can't stomach the smell and swear that if I'm around it too long I feel like I can't breathe. I sure feel guilty for putting those around me through that for so long!!!
I too have invested in sugar free chewing gum. My jaw hurts like someone punched me from chewing, but at least I'm not smoking!:laugh: |

Yes I never knew the smell to be so bad until now. I've smoked since I was 16 and I'm about 2 weeks away from the BIG 40!! Speaking of gum thanks for reminding me I need to buy some more.

So, have you gained any weight when you quit? I have managed not to (knock on wood), but my hubby quit with me. He's always been naturally thin but after quitting, he's gained 12 lbs around his mid-section! It's a good thing though, it finally got him to the gym! ha ha.

that's funny. I thought I would have put on some weight by now but thats hasn't been the case. I've been lucky I'm loosing and gettng leaner instead. I take weight gainer and still don't add much except a few lbs or so.

Good tip carivan. I watched Oprah and Dr. Oz about a month ago (I'm an Oprah addict), they are on a no-smoking kick trying help people quit.
They said that you shouldn't say "I am quitting smoking today" or "today is my last cigarette" or "I've been a week without a smoke". You are supposed to say "BREATHING FREE" like "I'm breathing free as of today" or "I've been breathing free for 2 months". By saying smoking or cigarette you can trigger yourself into wanting one and it's still got that ugly unhealthy feel to it (psychologically speaking). I've tried it, and it does seem to make me feel better, "breathing free" just sounds cleaner and fits my healthy lifestyle better. Hopefully others trying to quit can give it a try. |

That's so true Carivan. The first time someone asked me for a light after I quit I remember the feeling of pride I got when I said "I don't have one...I don't smoke" I used the patch for 6 days then quit that too. I found it easier knowing I had a safety net in my pocket in case it got too bad. A poolhall buddy of mine offered some advice he used when he quit. He said that when he wanted a smoke he'd say outloud "I don't smoke, I don't want it and I don't need it." I tried it even though i felt kinda funny trying to brainwash myself but I did and it worked pretty good. Stick with it there's nothing too it nonsmoker since may 05 ============ Quoting from carivan: Way to go! Congratulations! Eventually you won't even be thinking about how long you have quit! Congrats gs!!! That's terrific. I stopped smoking on Christmas Day 2007. I still think about it and of course want to pick one up but usually the craving subsides a few minutes after the initial thought. I'm on Chantix and honestly it has been an absolute life saver for me. I don't however get grossed out by the smoke or repulsed by smokers. I actually like smelling it and have to remove myself from the people smoking for fear of wanting to join it! The saying breathing free rather than no smoking is a great idea, Thanks!!

I really think everyone is different. Each person needs to find what inspires them to achieve there goals. Whether it's to quit smoking or loose weight.
Lucky for me my gf of 5 months is totaly amazing. She has been extremely supportive and has been my influence and inspiration. And no you cannot date my gf in order to quit smoking. lol |

on the 29th i'll be at 3 months =) my gf made a bet with me i couldn't go 2 months without it. My best motivation is people telling me that I can't do something and she happened to know it just kept going with it after that =)

smartest thing money-wise also! 4 bucks a pack, if you go thru 5 packs a week theres 20 bucks a wk, 80 bucks a month or almost a grand a year. that's a pretty good chunk of change!

lol!- very true, and if my wife were to cut off actions in the bedroom. By this time next year you would find me entering the mr universe contest while saving the third world from the threat of starvation. lol

Congrats gs- that makes it about seven months by now. I start my quiting attempt on the 18th (Aug) and I sure hope to be leaving a comment on FT in seven months time like your own success. I got a non smoking wife (never even tried- clever girl lol) and two great lil girls. I should not be smoking! esspecialy now with the new workouts I got from here!!
And for docksideguy05, over in the UK the $ is about $1.98 to the £1- I just got what I pray is my last pack of x20 smokes- it cost me £6.07! ($12+)- I want that stack of cash, not the taxman!. Incidently a great friend from South Carolina was over last year, poor guy needed a smoke when he left the store after stepping in to get 20 lol. Good luck all!! -------------- I want something good to die for, to make it beautiful to live. |

Thanks a lot. I really think everyone can do it. You just need to find what motivates you. I'm sure if your wife was to cut you off in the bedroom you would be able to quit in no time. Don't laugh!!! Back when I quit in Jan my new gf said she really didn't care much for the smell that smoking had left my clothes my breath etc. She found some great info and gave it to me. If you want some helpful hints drop me a line I'd be glad to help.
