How much weight to lift

i have been doing a lot of pushup and other body work, but i want to gain some more strength. i just started lifting and i was wondering how much weight should i be lifting(my max, a little less than max,) i have no clue i need some help

Always lift a weight that you can do with proper form and that gives you the most resistance on the last three reps of the set. Remember that form is more important than weight level as you can eventually injure yourself.

No where near you max, which you don't know anyway. Just pick something light to start out with and work your way up.
