Why is protein so important when body-building and how can I get a good amount without eating those nasty protein-enriched bars?

Protiens are the 'building blocks' to new muscle growth. Simple as that.. without it, you will not add quality muscle mass.
Most of the nasty tasting bars are on their way out, Co's realize that taste is becoming a factor in the industry. ProMax bars are excellent!

try food sources of protien..I prefer them to supplements which cost a lot and are as effective these are fine examples: egg whites, beans, fish, meat, poultry like chicken breasts...
If you feel as if supplements has to be part of reg meals then go 4 whey protien...as far as I know they are the best around...

Thanx for the info. I'm not too hip on fish or eggs but I'll never turn down a good steak. I heard that you're supposed to take in a large amount of protein right after a workout. Is that true? Or is it the overall amount you take in during a week or even a day?

It's true.
There is a window of about 45-60 minutes immediately following your workout when your body will best absorb the portein for the most efficient usage. That is why many drink a protein shake or meal replacement shake right after training. It is also important that you replenish your body with carbs, so make sure the shake has some carbos in it. Liquid form of the shake is best absorbed by your body so that is why. Then about 90-120 minutes after your workout you should consume a solid meal, high in protein as well as carbs.
Good luck!

its good to have a certain amount a day in your diet right here in the arnold encyclopedia it says the general recommended amount of protein in the average diet is 1 gram per 2.2 pounds and that experts beleive that with hard training bodybuilders do not need any more protein than this but the majority of bodybuilders like to take 1 gram per pound of bodyweight

Your muscles are 70% water 20% protien and 10% whatever else. But protien is what makes your muscles grow and heal. If you lift and don't take in protien you will actually lose muscle mass, which will slow your metabolism, which will make you store more fat.........so remember protien is good. :) Rob

to answer your question, you need to know how muscles grow from your workout....you see after every workout, the muscle strands generate microscopic tears....now some of the proteins you intake are responsible for repairing these damages.....the repaired part is the growth....so thats how important proteins are.... you can gulp down on milk.....my favorite protein source...a 16 ounce gives you 16 grams of protein...
try this : when you have supplements or bars, just think of all the good nutritions you r having and how good it is for you.....then youll love the bars..
