When doing heavy lifts (squats, deadlifts)I find it difficult to control my breathing during the reps. Sometimes after a set I'm lightheaded. Is this normal? How should I breath?

I have found in my own training if you breath thru your nose and exhale thru you mouth you won't have that problem,especially if you exhale slow.

Dudes breathing is an integral part of the lift. Inhale as your extend or lower the weight and exhale as you contract or lift the weight.You get dizzy due to lack of oxygen and the constriction of the blood vessels due to the increased pressure in the chest cavity that prevents blood from returning to the heart. It gets pretty complicated physiologically but you need to forcefully exhale as you lift especiallyl with heavier weights. Breathing throught the nose especially post-set helps with reoxygenating the blood if your purse your lips and exhale against the resistance by keeping the oxygen in the lung longer so that more O2(oxygen) can be "absorbed" into the blood. Check out martial artists as they exhale to create power.It has to do with breathibng through your center. A chi thing.

Dont breathe too hard....maybe thats why you get light headed.....cos you give out the air before enough oxygen can be taken from it.
Always breathe out when you are lifting a weight and release when you r releasing the weight.Dont hold your breath.

Control your breathing. Think about your breathing pattern as much as how you are performing the exercise movement. It as much a part of the routine and ensures that you are performing to your max capability.

Sfckellyk, Dang your nickname is hard to type. :)
Squats can be very Anabolic and also a good Cardiorespiratory exercise. It works part of your back and all of your legs along with great cardio properties. So, therefore finding it hard to breathe can be a normal thing. Be sure to concentrate on your breathing as you do each rep. Breathe in going down through the nose and breathe out through the mouth coming back up.

I once read that a full set of squats takes as much O2 as running one mile. Like a couple guys already said, control your breathing and concentrate on your body as you go. I used to get that and have ringing in my ears even. I just hadn't learned yet to control the excercises.

i also get lightheaded doing squats or leg presses. the only way i've found to deal with it is to try to focus and concentrate on the movement. I HATE SQAUTS
